I have a problem with Afrihost Mobile.

My situation as summerised as possible is the following:
I have their mifi device with 500M of data monthly.
If this data runs out I cant top up as all internet connectivity is lost even to their client zone.
if I have no other source of internet to top up I am screwed.
Auto top up is not a option as i am a developer and all it takes is one video to load or windows 10 to update (since i cant stop it as its seen as a wifi device and not a mobile device) and i can get a bill of 1000's of rands.

So my question is what mobile provider allows me to top up even if my data has run out as Afrihost certainly doesnt allow this.

A very big flaw in their system.

BTW: trips to SPUR at 1am in the morning to use there free wifi is the only option i have currently to top up.

Why dont you upgrade to 2GB for R99?

Yea i know this wont solve the initial problem.

Its used in emergency situations, if my data on my phone is done and my data on the mifi is done then there is nothing I can do. And not going to spend R100 on 2Gig of data when R29 @ 250M is enough.

Clearly not?

Could this work?:- It's not a very elegant solution, but hey, if it works then I guess it beats a trip to the Spur at 1am...

I'm not familiar with the device, does it have a removable SIM? Presuming it does, then perhaps you could take it out and put it in any cellphone and you should be able to top us using an MTN USSD (or SMS)...

Yes/no?

Yes which is the next step but I would rather get another provider which does allow you to top up when your data runs out hence my original question in the start of the thread.

Hi Dynamo. :) Sorry about the late reply here! I think there are a couple of options that you can explore to fix your problem.

The first, and perhaps the easiest method, would be to activate Auto Topups on your account. This can be set to increments as small as 250MB at a time and you can also set a limit on this in order to avoid shock bills. :)

Secondly, you should actually see a "Capped Screen" if you have run out of data which you can use to top up from. Our Development Team should have Zero Rated this, so you should be able to top up even if you have been capped.

Lastly, perhaps downloading the Afrihost App onto your phone would be a great way to top up as I'm sure that the likelihood of you being capped on your mifi and on your phone at the same time is low. :)

Let me know if you have any further questions and I'll be happy to oblige! :)

Hi AfriFella

Its a backup device where i dont know how much data will be used and being end of the month I would prefer to manage the top ups myself.
On my mifi (which was one of the first given away for free when AfriHost launched the service) once the data is finished its impossible to do anything, no zero rated data anywhere for the Afrihost site. So i investigated and i see the mifi actually gets dropped on MTN network when no data, can see it connecting and disconnecting on a loop until there is data. it is as if Afrihost/MTN is rejecting the login into the network when there is no data instead of logging the device in and closing the tunnel except to zero rated data. Could this be a issue with the old firmware and the new devices dont do this? If so where can i get a firmware update (since its AH branded Im sure you guys should have your own firmware).

As stated its one of the 2000 free ones when the promotion of mobile data started by AH. Dont have it now with me unfortunately.
