On Sunday night I heard on 702 a news story about 8 young boys dying after an initiation ceremony and 14 were hospitalised. Tribal leaders were not allowing access to the kids in hospital. I can't find a single link to this story anywhere. Is this thing being swept under the carpet? How can these so called "leaders" allow this kind of thing to go on?

And the ANC profess to have the peoples interests at heart... eish
If they want to uphold this barbaric rituals... maybe they could nail these "tribal leaders" for neglect for once :(

If people want to go through barbaric rituals let them. If you try and do something about it you will hear about "culture" & "racism" untill the cows come home.

The kids could just run away? I did when I was a kid, works... The system fails, not all humans are the same or think the same. I think we must look into religion and things like that. Women still get stoned maybe not in s.a but here kids die so I don't know WTF is up with our world.

I want to agree.... but this is peoples lives... find it hard to say ... "Aah well..." :( Eish

I agree but you can only feel sorry for people so long.

This happens every frigging year and has been happening since forever. If it was me I would remember what happened to the other people all the previous years and make a decision based on that. If you don't learn from the fact that people either die or undergo amputation every year then you are stupid.

Same goes for AIDS and other similair things. You can only help people so much.

Religion & Culture are big influences to many people. They blindly believe and follow not questioning anything. Just because something is in your culture or religion does not mean it is right. Human race has a long way to go.

where does this have anything to do with the ANC?

If the ANC would just stop worrying about their votes and rather their voters... they'd take a much harder stance on this problem
They've been in power long enough to sort this stupidity out... but then they're all idiots too I guess:rolleyes:
You might not be able to stop this culture thing.. but surely qualified doctors could be sent to go into the bush with them
It's not like these events happen every single day

If the goverment.. which happens to be the ANC... can't sort this out... then who can... don't you think

How many kids get killed each year? Not a lot, in fact, more die from other reasons and the ANC does not care. Because they have lots more voters and anyway, they in power for the next 5 years, so don't bother expecting them to do something about culture mistakes like this.

A large proportion of these deaths are as a result of illegal intiation schools and untrained traditional surgeons.

This is not a barbaric ritual when it is done properly, It is an important right of passage for young men in the Xhosa culture.

Many young men actually run away to go to these intiation schools which is encourages the proliferation of illegal schools

Could not have said it any better. :)

Mbeki spoke about the African renaissance, and this is where it should be coming into action.

Outlaw out of date cultural rituals, all modern societies had to do the same, in Europe they stopped burning thousands of women alive, centuries ago.

In Africa they still burn people alive for a variety of racialbased reasons like xenophobia.

Circumcision can be a quick health risk free snip, as has been proven by millions of Jews and Muslims worldwide, why Africans should insist on killing their young men is beyond understanding.

Make it law that a Doctor should be present at these ceremonies?

Its a good idea and already being practiced in many places. When my younger brother went for initiation in 2003, the law required that he had to get a doctors medical certificate, consent from parents and use a surgeon that is certified by Doctors to conduct the circumcision.

Even if a doctor is doing it, or is present. Do you think its really safe doing it in the bloody middle of nowhere.. in a velt?

If you want to get circumcised, get it done in a hospital by a professional doctor.. not by some mhlungu wearing a leopard skin with a dirty knife.

I have no sympathy... these people know what they're getting themselves into. Stories of death and serious infection is broadcast every year...

Seconded. Personally, I think it's damn stupid, but as long as they're old enough, let them make their own decisions. The govt. does need to prosecute those who do not follow the regulations though.

I was about to say that I had no sympathy either but we must understand that we are dealing with children here. The real bullies are the parents and the society from whence they come.

And this is so simple to fix - just ban ritual mutilation.

And the first turkey to start whining about taking away his culture loses his car, tv and house and can have a straw hut and some animal skins to wear. Either you get with the times completely or you can stay in the past.

And if you need some symbol of being in a 'club', give everyone a little identity card.

Right - who do I have a go at next? Any religious zealots?
