Innovative tech helping fix urbanisation decay

Cities across South Africa are facing increasing pressures, such as rapid urbanisation, which results in infrastructure decay, inequality, climate change, and social fragmentation.

As such, traditional public spaces often fail to address the complex needs of a rapidly growing and diverse population. Such challenges have sparked the debate about how public spaces function.

These places can work well when they are small in scale, as is the case with the two examples given. The larger spaces with areas to hide, in Pretoria at least, can be taken over by vagrants and rubbish pickers if they are not well policed. The one example given in the article, Moja Gabedi, is also protected by a picket fence.
