Insane download speeds !

Did a speed test at one of the PC's in the lab at UJ on thursday and I was shocked

This isn't news. All universities have fast internet. The University of Pretoria for example has a 10Gbps connection.

Try international though. I bet it'll be shaped down to about 2Mbps or even lower depending on conditions. IIRC the varsities are on Tenet.

It'll be way slower. Noticeable when downloading scientific journal articles (say PDFs from ScienceDirect through the library proxy) can be sluggish at times.

That speed will not necessarily reflect how each varsity shapes traffic at the end-user level. I say that anecdotally. Internationally my UJ office internet speed (no matter which network point) is almost one order of magnitude slower.

I got something like 600Mbps down/up at Stellenbosch last year some time.
