As far as I know FB have been designing and building their own server hardware for a while now.

Have all these toys at your disposal makes life a hell of a lot easier.

Indeed, with the number of datacentres they need, it makes sense to design their own stuff. Also, they're like the founding member of the Open Hardware Alliance or whatever it's called.

Not to mention all the non-computer / server toys they're probably playing with in there. (Like solar powered long range Internet drones).

True if I. Had the money I would prefer our company to be less dependable on other vendors as well so I guess yea it makes sense.
