Inside the coal supply emergency at Eskom

Came here to post the link. Chris Yelland is a very good source.

At least this problem is not caused by the Guptas (Optimum), so there is a chance that it can be fixed. However, given the dysfunctional Eskom, that may be a challenge.

The 2008 one was not caused by the Guptas either. It was just good old greedy corruption where management ran down stock levels (and neglected maintenance - the state of some of these power stations was apparently frightening (a combo of neglect by the grumpy sidelined, corruption and incompetence by willfully employing unqualified/inexperienced people to in part boost gender representation)) to artificially boost the bottom so they could earn bonuses. They then continued on to profit from the resulting crisis with various corrupt dealings and what not.

Currently experiencing a brown-out here in BFN since 8:30... not a nice article to read when you're already sitting without power!

This is entirely due to rampant incompetence and/or corruption in the granting and management of these contracts.

We all know about the Optimum Coal fiasco, so it is little surprise that the problem is more widespread.

And with time it has became clearer that the previous load shedding issues were mostly due to inadequate coal supply, so the Eskom and government leadership should be seriously embarrassed that they have allowed this recur for what looks likely to be the third round of load shedding going into winter.

It is entirely unnecessary in a country with some of the richest coal deposits in the world. This has such a negative impact on all aspects of South African society and the economy that anyone involved in this whole chain of fail, fraud and incompetence should be tried for treason.

In addition, Eskom justifies procurement from non-tied miners on the need to increase diversity and facilitate black economic empowerment (BEE) in the coal mining sector.
Who needs electricity when there are more important goals of diversity and BEE.

Swines want their massive increases, what better way to get their way again than to hold the country hostage all over again.

There's a lot of 'allegedly' going on in these reports.

Is it that hard for a journo to go visit these sites and see if there's as much coal compared to google earth?
I've not noticed the open-cycle turbines here in Cape Town running (but then I'm not driving past the N2/M7) junction that often at peak times... anyone else seen them running?

Thought they were in Atlantis?
