Instagram sends warning

Instagram is sending a video to millions of teenagers to warn them about sextortion, a cybercrime that has proliferated on the app and in some cases has driven young users to suicide.

The video, which opens with the line “Let’s talk about sextortion,” will be pushed to teens and young adults in the US, the UK and Canada on Thursday, Instagram parent company Meta Platforms Inc. said in a statement.

Parents failed.
This is so sick and insensitive.

I do have to wonder if your online bravado would translate into offline bravery when standing in front of a parent whose child has killed themselves and telling them that it was their fault.

It's a fact though. What is happening in society is sickening. It starts at home.

Mom and Pop have no morals
Mom and Pop are hardly ever around, in some cases both working long hours for minimum wage
Mom and Pop let the internet raise their kids
Kids learn that fooling around with people sexually online is a nice way to feel good and get attention.

This is just an attempt to put the responsibility on the minors to handle the problem. i.e. Just kicking the can down the road. To the last place it should reasonably ever need to go. If they know well enough to identify and send targeted videos to minors, then they know who the minors are. And you can bet the farm on them knowing, being able to identify in real-time, when and who the offenders are.

Logically, the only reason why they would be disinclined to build adequate automatic safeguards into their system, would be because they are disinclined to lose the business of the offenders. Just like with the flood of malign propagandist activity social media hosts these days. They care only about the profits.
