Yes, the alternate install is the version you want. Been wanting to try this out too. Downloaded the alpha last night and installed in Virtual box, then I installed the virtual box additions and my mouse cursor disappeared - so I uninstalled the additions and now it wont boot. Meh, guess it is still in alpha stage.

But how do you start the installation so i can choose what applications to install?? I dont want games, openoffice and all that other jazz.. It must just be the base OS with not applications..

Not sure, as I haven't tried it. Downloading the Karmic alternate install now - to see how it works. There may be an issue doing this with the alpha as it's not the final release and maybe the proper installer isn't implemented yet (this is my guess).

Busy with the Karmic alternate install now and it seems this is not what I was after either. Only read about the alternate installer and thought it would enable you to select components manually. Obviously not. Suppose you could use the server install and then add the components as needed. Well, lets see what mischief I can get up to.

Just installed KDE on a Karmic server install (those server components are all optional). Only about 150MB of downloads, using the KDE-minimal package. Very interesting.

If you want to go OS only, maybe it would be worth your while to consider another distro, such as Gentoo? Much more modular, though the support for it is a bit less than for Ubuntu. One advantage in some of your cases would be that all apps are compiled 64bit natively.

Most of the older distro's take's allot of tinkering to get working in MS VPC. So far 10.04 has installed, booted and is working fine without having to add boot line noreplace-paravirt vga=791.. So that is why im interested in this distro.. Going to take it apart at home and see what happens.. :)

It seems the most efficient manner of getting rid of these pesky applications is to create your own custom installation with UCK.
