Hey all,

We're moving into a new double story house soon and the phone/adsl point is downstairs. We will be using our adsl upstairs and will not be using a phone. What is involved in moving the phone point from downstairs to upstairs?

Is this something we need to ask telkom to do when they come to connect the adsl? Or do we need to run a phone cable ourselves from the downstairs connection point along the wall, all the way upstairs?

Im guessing it's up to us, in which case is there any special kind of cable that we need to get considering it's quite a distance from downstairs to where the adsl needs to be upstairs.

Also, will this degrade the adsl speed/quality at all by running a cable ourselves? Will it be better to have a proper phone connection installed upstairs by telkom?

In the end, we don't need the downstairs connection point (unless it has to stay for some reason?).

Many thanks.

You can move it yourself - or you can phone telkom and ask them to send a techy out to do it for you.

Its basically a cable with 2 little wires in it (or 4 or 6 etc., but you only use 2), you can easily extend it yourself, however Telkom does install 1 point for you as part of the installation, not sure if there is a distance limit to this.

I would do it myself, it will probably be neater than what the technician will do it, they usually plaster it with glue from a glue-gun and choose the shortest most obtrusive route. In terms of the connection, it can be as simple as twisting the wires together, or using a small connector box, even a chocolate block will work, its basically just an extension of the cable.
