Installing a New Car Radio?

OK, so I got an LG MP3 Car Stereo Radio CD Player... and I wanna install it. I took the old Alpine Plain CD system out. Now all I have is the old harness (I have not cut any wires yet) and the aerial.

So do I just go ahead and cut the wires on the new harness and connect them to the same colour wires? Or do I take it to a car radio install place and let them clean up the wiring and put a new harness connector in for me?

How much do these places typically charge?

I might also want them to fit rear speakers for me in the station wagon as I only have front speakers.
 
best you find your local car audio installation place, FYI you should not pay more than R200 for the radio install as well as fitting rear speakers (unless you are not supplying the speakers as well)

No, I would not go on colour alone as there is no set standard. The wires should be labled though, if not you will have to trace them out.

Ja, I was hoping for around that price for the installation, but I will have to buy some rear speakers from them.
 
I like to do such things myself, seen too many bad work form such places.

Here's what I do:

What I normally do, cut all the wires. Get a 12 volt bulb. Then check for the wires which are thicker, they are normally the power ones. Get a long loose wire, connect that to the body. Then switch on the ignition, and check which other wire lit the bulb, there must be 2 which lit it up. Then switch off the ign, and check which wire still lit it up. Then you have the ign live wire, and the memory live wire. Then switch on again, connect the live wire to the bulb, disconnect the wire you connected to the body, and then check again with the harness for the earth wire. Then the wires left will be the left and right speaker wires. Normally left will be the same color, and right the same, but thats not too difficult to trace. Then connect all the wires according to the guide of the player.

The rest to fit the radio isn't difficult.

haha... it's OK, I'll probably just get the guys at the radio installation place to do it if it does not cost too much. Better that than I burn my car up with an electrical short! :p
 
Rather go the DIY route on this. If you have the wiring layout of the old connector block then it will be easy to wire it up to the new one.

Are you sure that they are not the same? I was in luck when I installed an after-market head unit in my old Astra because the DIN clip was the same. Just had to switch the standby and acc. power lines.

Sorry, AA Car Audio Installation seems to have bumped it up and I paid no attention the the OP date...
