Hey everyone

I am trying to install a printer on my notebook but I'm constantly having the same problem over and over...

I've got the correct drivers, printer is in a working order.

Now, everytime I start installing the software everything installs perfectly until I get to the final stage where I need to plug in the printer to finish the installation.

When I get to this point and I connnect the USB to my notebook the "Add new hardware" windows popup starts, the installation fails and well the printer doesnt work.

I've tried installing the software directly from the CD, downloaded the latest software and actually used the windows "Add new hardware" popup to search for the drivers and tried installing but it still failed...

Any ideas why this is happening?

Could there be something wrong with my USB or has anyone had the same problems?

Do other USB devices work on the port you are using? If there is more than one port, have you tried the others?

You can also try powering the notebook off, plugging the usb in and then switching on.

Hey

OS = Windows XP
Printer = HP LaserJet 1018

I've used other divices in the USB port, currently using my 3G internet modem in the port I connected the printer.
Other ports also got hardware connected (wirelees receiver for keyboard+mouse & Ipod)

I don't thinks its a hardware problem, maybe a virus or usb software problem?

I'm quickly going to try and powering the notebook off and switching it on with the USB connected.

Any help would be appreciated.

Tried it, still not working :(

For some reason my notebook won't recognize USB printers or some memory sticks, really weird.....

But it still recognizes my ipod, 3Gmodem?

:(

The cable might be faulty

This happens a lot when the RunOnce key is missing from the registry. According to Microsoft's KB, this is because some driver installation utilities can remove the key.

Start|Run|type regedit

Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SOFTWARE, Microsoft, Windows and finally CurrentVersion. In the left pane there should be a RunOnce key.

If it's not there, add it as follows:
Right-click CurrentVersion, go to New, then Key. Name the key RunOnce - you can leave everything else as is.
Restart your machine.

hp printers

With HP printers if the first installation fails there is a procedure whereby you have got to go into the registry (hardware section) and delete the first failed attempt - cause some of the s/w settings remains there and you are just re-installing on top of that. It does not allow you past that.Cannot for the life of remember the actual registry entry you go to - used to do that in the field, days gone by, but there definitely something to that effect on HP support site, where I originally got it from. If still no joy, you can phone their support dudes in Corporate Park (used to ISS, name changed now)

Try uninstalling the printer software from add/remove programs. Power off laptop and with printer USB unplugged power on again.

Recover to a point in time prior to your first attempt to install the printer.

Run the HP printer software install again.
