As some saw, I'm in the prosces of buying a new laptop. The ones with ssd installed, doesn't fit my budget, so I need to get one with a normal add, and install a ssd.

Now if I understand this process right, I will have to get 2 enclosures. One for the new laptop hdd, and one for the ssd drive, to clone the files to the ssd.
My questions are:
Is it possible to get 1 enclosure, then clone the hdd files to my home pc, then put the ssd into the enclosure, and clone the files to the ssd again.
Will I get one enclosure that fits hdd and ssd?
Then, is it a fact that any 2.5 inch ssd will fit into a new laptop?

Thanks

No. You only need one enclosure or alternatively a caddy to replace your optical drive if you have one. The caddy is the better option as you will end up having both the ssd & hdd inside the laptop.

If you go with an enclosure you only need one to image the drive to the ssd.

1. Remove normal drive
2. Insert ssd
3. Install windows

No enclosures needed.

That's the third option if he's happy with a reinstall which is probably better anyway but some people are lazy.

I dont mind a new install, but remember this will be a brand new laptop, not an existing installation. And most new systems comes with o/s on the drive, no cd's. Thats why I want to cone the drive. And that is why I asked the above questions, because I dont think I can clone a drive while it is still being used, or can I?

I wanted to take out the drive, clone to the new drive, and install it.

Download the windows that comes with ur laptop and put it on a flash or dvd. Install SSD, install windows using the key on the laptop, sorted...

The first thing I do when getting a laptop is to format to get rid of bloatware anyway

Okay that seems like a plan. Didn't think of that!

Thanks

I installed a 512GB SSD in a new laptop.

I initially cloned the drive, and it seemed to work fine but I ran into some Windows issues later on and had to do a clean reinstall anyway.

Rather just do a clean reinstall. Make sure that you can get all the required drivers.

They allow you to create recovery DVDs from the recovery partition on the HDD. So boot up and create the DVD(s)...
So Ordered the laptop and ssd drive. You say they aalow to create recovery dvd's. Tell me will this be for the os and drivers needed for the laptop?

It would be but dont use it. The windows key will be in the UEFI bios, just install a clean copy of win8.1 64bit and it will pick up the key.
Download the drivers from the manufacturer website.
Trust me you want to do it this way.

Okay, lets wait and try then. Thanks

Correct as otherwise it's gonna come with all the crap bloatware they bundle with computers these days.
