This is the general idea in my head.

Install CentOS
Install Cpanel
Install CloudLinux

... and I think they have to be done in that order. I have never installed Cloudlinux so not sure what to expect, but all the scripts/documentation I see seem to imply that I have to install centos+cpanel .. then then install Cloudlinux. Does anyone here have experience with this type of setup or has used cloudlinux? It looks really sexy and is worth the $14 a month subscription.

I kinda have to use CentOS.... would prefer Debian, but it seems Cpanel is sexed for CentOS or FreeBSD. I have a choice between CentOS 5.2 (which I am familiar with) and CentOS 6 (which I have never used). What are the major differences between the two? There seems to be more support for 5.2 (so it would be easier to install), but if there is a massive performance boost? Or a reason worth installing 6 over 5.2? (I know 5.2 has those lame python issues...).

You should really not be running 5.2 anymore. 5.7 if you want 5, but I would pretty much stick to 6 by now.

Newer versions of everything, pretty much. The versions of PHP and MySQL that ship with 5.x are all EOL.

What do you think of that Cloudlinux?

Never heard of it. I'm not a fan of CPanel either - don't like the way it screws with the OS and compiles packages from source instead of using what's already provided.

Coming to think of it, that kinda voids my argument about versions of MySQL and PHP, since CPanel builds its own. I would still use CentOS6 though - everything else is newer and the box will last longer before update support for it fades away.

I really like CPanel. I gotta deal with thousands of domains.... so yeah. Its a necessity for me. Plesk is just terrible. Cpanel with the mods we have gives us a stable, secure and incredibly productive platform. Im all for better solutions though... but for what we host, I cant see anything better. Cloudlinux basically address`s the biggest weakness a shared hosting platform has. If one account gets compromised it can denial of service the server(killing cpu). One email account gets hacked and next second you have 10000000 spam bots relaying through it. This is why I see the value in LVE.

Wish they made it for debian :(

What's wrong with Plesk?

I hope you intend to do a thorough technical assessment of this before you roll it into production. Their website is pretty sparse on details, and nothing it lists can't be achieved with the tools that already ship with RHEL/CentOS and maybe a few bits&bobs from the EPEL repos.

Bloated, slow, and simple tasks are more complex. Like adding an email address. It used to break all the time (8 and 9 series), but the 10 series seems better. I dont like the way it manages config files as well. I just dont like it and none of my staff like it. We have a bunch of servers with it and the only place its any good is with windows hosting (even then its terribly slow but there are no other better alternatives).

In terms of functionality cpanel (for our needs) in miles ahead of plesk. Our backup and restore system is simple and works wonderfully. Moving accounts between servers is a breeze. The API`s are much loved by our developers. Even the WHM/CPanel android apps are better.

This is a new server I get to learn on. Im familiar with cpanel/centos5.2 I am not familiar with CentOS6+Cpanel+Cloudlinux so this is going to be fun :)

Slow? No. Bloated? Perhaps - it probably has stuff you don't need, but others do. I agree that the interface logic sometimes isn't all that great, but that goes for CPanel too.

Like adding an email address.

Really? Domains -> domain.tld -> Mail Accounts -> Create Mail Account

That's seems pretty simple to me?

BS. My team supports tens of thousands of Plesk machines, all the way from version 5 through 10, I can tell you with confidence that you're dead wrong. The times when "Plesk breaks" is almost always down customers doing silly things like filling up the file system or dropping the psa databse.

Sounds more like personal taste. People who like CPanel generally don't like Plesk and vice versa. (for the record, I don't like either, I just happen to work with Plesk).

Well you`re a first. Someone who likes Plesk. Okay, never thought there was someone who preferred plesk to cpanel :D

No, I don't:

I know Plesk very well, and know how it performs on a stock RHEL box raning from RHEL2 through RHEL6 and Plesk 5 through Plesk 10 on a range of hardware from virtual servers (Xen/KVM/VMware) to entry-level desktop class boxes with 1GB Ram to Dell R900 boxes pimped to the Max.

When you google Cpanel vs Plesk and read all the opinions out there... most seem to be similar to mine. Dunno why. Check it out.

I must say I really enjoy cpanel but at the moment I don't feel like paying for it (unnecessary) so I am using webmin. It's not as great but does everything I need :P
