I have recently been given a Samsung Galaxy S2 and would like to install CM on it. On the website http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_i9100 there are a lot of warning messages and I don't feel comfortable / safe doing it.

Has anyone here had any experience? I would love some help as I really don't want to brick this phone.

Running Android 2.3.3
Baseband version I900XXKE7
Kernel 2.6.35.7-I900XWKF3-CL276555 root@DELL101 #2
Build number GINGERBREAD.XWKF3

You have to be special to brick a S2. See the thread http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=310491 Samsung Galaxy S2

Definitely worth it, just read and you'll be fine! I rate it is the best phone samsungs made! great form factor and performance.

Thanks, the thread is 1000+ pages long. I searched for flash, cyanogen and cm and I have found info on 4 different roms.

What should I try searching for?

Actually all you need is on their site. Easiest way (for me) is to install JB - get it from sammobile. Then install Philz kernel through recovery - from XDA. Now you should be rooted. Download CM 10.1 from their site. Put the file on the phone and install through recovery after you've done a full factory reset. Download gapps if required and install frim recovery. Should take 30mins

Tried to update to ICS using Kies (went to bed after telling it to update and woke up with my phone frozen and the download somehow did not finish).

My Telkom ADSL has been very bad these last 2 weeks and downloads are taking forever.

Will try again as soon as I can.

Never used that, but the reviews speak for themselves. I use this updater on my Nexus 7. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cyandelta
It is great. It only updates the changes in nightlies from the one installed vs the latest one available.

I've flip-flopped between ROM's and various CM builds (flashed via CWM) and I've never had a single problem on my S2. Recently I've started using the GS2RomWipe script to wipe all system/rom data before installing a new one, so my steps are as follows:

Reboot in Recovery and install GS2RomWipe
Install ROM
Wipe Cache & Dalvik Cache

Although I never had any problems prior to using that script, it's just an extra step that put's my mind at ease - though it's probably not necessary for a first-time ROM install :).

I somehow found myself having endless issues with custom ROM's and my S2.

It's all good in the beginning, then slowly issues creep up. The last time my GPS stopped working.

I gave up, downloaded a stock firmware, popped that on and rooted.

Haven't had issues in months.

I am considering a custom ROM based on a stock ROM, to improve battery life.
