Installing linux alongside Mavericks on an ext drive (booting from a mac)

is this possible

i though i got it right for a moment - after little mrs penguin appeared as the icon for one of the boot devices available, rEFit decided this was simply not on.

i did however see somewhere that rEFit is no longer supported - not sure what that actually means ie. the software developer no longer supports the product - or rEFit does not support mavericks.

anyone here got this right ?
 
rEFIt is no longer in development, but rEFInd is. However, you don't need either since since Macs support EFI boot. Just install Linux as per normal, mount your EFI partition and bless GRUB. Then hold down the Option key on startup to choose which OS to boot from. Some distros don't need the Bless option. They work out the box. Fedora for example works integrates itself perfectly with the builtin Mac boot loader and Ubuntu is hit and miss.
