Installing Windows Server 2008 on HP Proliant DL380 G3

Hi all,

Hope I can get some help. I'm totally new to Linux. Been using Knoppix on my laptop for about a month and it's really good.

But now I'm trying to install Windows Server 2008 on the DL380 but it only has a CD-ROM drive and the Windows OS only fits on a DVD and the DL380 can't boot up off a flash drive either. In the mean-time I just installed Ubuntu Server 8.04 to see if I could boot it somehow in Windows. Thing is, in Knoppix there's a nice GUI but in Ubuntu there's only command line and I'm not familiar with any commands. Any idea how to install Windows Server 2008 on the DL380 in this situation or where to check out some useful commands? Ideally I would want to partition the hard drive and install Windows on this partition and boot up with this.

Any help would be appreciated.

Which DL380 is it ? g4 g5 g6 g7 ? It's rather strange there is no option for usb , check the bios again make sure you have usb legacy enabled , you should be able to boot from a usb thumb drive as well if its not picking up the external dvd rom

It's a G3. Can't even find usb legacy settings. Download HP SmartStart and plugged in my usb mouse and that worked but it's not picking up the flash drive that has the iso. Is installing Windows via the network complicated?
 
G3 doesn't have USB boot

You can use either smartstart or swap the CD-ROM for a DVD-ROM for the installation
 
install via ilo. My G1 blades support it, might be a different story for dls tho

Any idea what disk format Smartstart recognises? It's not picking up my flash drive yet the usb mouse works
 
It's very easy using a file share over the network.
Copy the ISO into a file share.
Follow the prompts once you've booted into SmartStart and select network share.
 
Here's what you do.

Create a small partition towards the end of your hard drive and make it bootable (win98 boot cd etc) and copy the contents of the iso (you will have to mount the iso) to the partition. you might have to do this by plugging the drive into another PC. Once you can boot that partition just cd to the right folder and run setup.exe or whatever it's called.

Google 128mbdos.img to create a bootable partition by just writing it with dd to the small partition.

the server should not pick up an external Drive as a USB boot drive it should pick it up as a CDrom drive "Just happening via USB"
