Hi guys, and a happy new year to all :)

I am hoping to get some advice on an incident that I had last night, as the insurer claims department is closed today, and I want to get the admin done as soon as possible.

I was returning home from a braai at approximately 10:30 and hit an animal on the N3 North between London and Marlboro drive. I assume it was a dog that was scared by the fireworks in Alexandra and found its way onto the highway. I was present in the vehicle but was not driving as I had a few drinks. The person driving saw the animal at the last moment and tried to avoid but we clipped on the passenger side of the vehicle and the bumper now needs to be replaced.

Do I need to get an accident report from the police for this incident? And what are the chances of the insurance paying out?

Thanks in advance.

Well with my insurance I have 48hours to report the case to the police and 30days to report to my insurance.

Yes, report to the police station as you normally have 24 hours. Your insurance claim will usually require a policy reference number as well.

1. Yes, you must report it at SAPS and get an accident report ref number.

2. Most policies cover the vehicle and will have a clause that will include any licensed driver as long as the driver is using the vehicle with the owner's permission. So have a look at your policy....

3. If the clause is there, insurance will cover the cost of the repair.

I think it has all been said in the above posts. Accident reference number from the police is a must. Most policies require notification of a possible claim within 30 days of the event.

If you are a named driver of the vehicle on policy, you may be able to claim as the circumstances of the friend driving you home in your vehicles could be construed as circumstances under which it is deemed to be an emergency situation.

If you need more advice, you are welcome to PM me (or post others here) with the details of your policy (company, type of policy, etc) to assist with formulating the claim or merits for the claim to be admitted.

Good chance there's a rather hefty excess due to the normal driver (ie you the insured) not being the driver at the time, normally a good R2k or so above whatever your std excess for that claim would be.

Depends on the insurance. Sometimes their is only extra excess if the driver is under 25.

normal excess R2500 + additional excess (under 25 etc). Total R4500 to replace bumper

How much does insurance actually pay out, anything?
