Im lately getting lots of calls for the installation of a tracker. Will the difference in cost to insure with a tracker offset the price of the monthly fee ?

With my A6 Outsurance gave me a discount on premiums, and skytrax was discounted from R125 PM to R85 PM.
Can't remember the Outsurance discount, but between the two it was fairly significant.

About 15-20% discount and no additional theft/hijack excess - this is the reputable insurers ave.

Reputable insurers won't request you add one to begin with.

Some insurers it's a requirement... I refuse to have one fitted. If I get a discount of lets say R 80 for having one, I should have the choice not to fit one. Simple as that.

Same here. Both my brothers had vehicles stolen with tracking devices, they recovered both vehicles.
After seeing what they do to the interior of the car to locate the device, I would rather not get the car back.
Both were completely destroyed.

I think it also depends on the vehicle, I am open to correction here, but I had a Velocity a while back and I remember my broker mentioning something about it coming into effect that certain vehicles that were deemed high risk would not be insured without one.
I sold they car before it came to that though, so I cannot say for certain.

When I queried this with my insurance company, they offered me a R4 discount...this was Hollard

Phone your insurance and ask.

I got R140 off my monthly premium, Tracetec tracker is R89/m

If this is the case, then its a viable option. will see that they say
If all you are interested in doing is reducing your monthly premium, then you're looking at your insurance the wrong way.

Hi,

I consult at one of the big Insurance companies and quickly did a quote using the same person and the same type of car. One quote with a tracker and one quote without a tracker.

This is what the monthly premiums come to:

With Tracker : R 961.17
Without Tracker : 991.57

Hope this helps.

My insurance said it makes no difference.
My previous insurance said I would incur an additional 5% excess if stolen or hijacked.

My previous insurance wanted me to get one... when I asked about the discount, I was told R70 per month, whilst the tracker would be at least R99.... and none of the excesses etc etc would change...

Yay! Getting one in my new car, this time I'm going to get them to wire it up to the CANBUS too so I can see when my aircon was on and other useless bits of information.

I had a tracker fitted by Netstar. They used to call me ro send me a sms every single day asking if the car was in an accident. If you drive just a little faster or accelerate around a corner, it sends a 'signal'. Funny thing is it didn't send a signal when I slammed on the brakes and went from 80-0 in a coupla secs to avoid a dog!

All of that is configurable, thresholds for over speed, harsh breaking or acceleration, excessive idle, over revving, harsh cornering... there is a lot of things your average tracker can pick up and if you connect it to the CANBUS it can also pick up all monitor vehicle data, like throttle position, ESP status even what seatbelts were used.
