Hey guys,

Do you have recommendations for a comapny to take insurance cover with?
Purposes: Personal cover for vehicle, and possibly household effects as well.

Have been with outsurance, and am pretty disappointed with them. They play by the book yes, but unfortunately haven't taken account of the impression their employees ave left. I've had to follow up too many times on the status of issues their consultants promised they would be following up on. I also don't appreciate being told that I should leave something to someone only to later be told that they havent done it, and won't be doing it. (by the book where they haven't assumed the risks according to the contract signed.)

Who have you guys had it easiest with?
Tx

Alexander Forbes, been with them for 30 years. Personal service and have always offered more for less when I have checked other Companies.

Claims have also been pain free, I have made 2 one for a break-in, and one for a lightning strike on computers.

All correspondance is now by EMail so I always have a copy.

Thanks Billy,
A friend also has cover with Alexander Forbes and is quite happy with their service. Still taking names if anyone else has suggestions.

Only advice is to work through a broker and not go direct. We just got an all inclusive insurance cover for the household goods, car, bicycle all risk & business and it was less cost but better cover than what we had just on the car & business. We worked through a broker who used the best insurer for our needs.

Keep in mind that many brokers are completely useless. They'll use whichever insurer makes them the most money and will be of no help when you need to make a claim.

True and talking from experience and that is why we switched brokers. Dont take the first broker that comes along, speak to at least 2 others.

Thanks guys,
Brokers also sound like a sensible way forward. Just out of interest, how does one whittle down the options and get to the best one? No one business or broker will openly admit, "we're crappy at X or Y". They'll all try sell themselves as the best, which can only be verified (painfully) with hindsight.

Going through broker is always the best thing to do because you get looked after and also when you claim the broker is on your side to fight for you should there be a dispute. Another thing is that companies like Outsurance actually insure you for trade-in price and not retail value which means that should you write-off your vehicle you won't be able to buy the same type of a vehicle for the money you will get out, also be careful with the clauses they have which don't cover specific items. I don't want this to sound like an advertisment but I'm a financial planner and we have a short-term department as well. We deal with 9 companies which include: Santam, Execuline, Frontline, Regent, CIB, MUA and etc. and at the same time we give you better premiums than you'd get directly from them becausewe are brokers and bring them nay clints, for the past 4 years we have paid all our claims without exception. Our prices are very competative too, just to give you an example: my cousin was paying R2719 p.m on his Mercedes SLK350, he moved to our company and is currently paying R970p.m which is a huge saving. If you are interested send me a PM and I will be more than happy to help, after all I don't think that you have anything to lose.
