You need to specify everything that can detach from the camera body. Body costs R12k, Canon 600mm F4 costs R90k, I'd specify the lens and forget the body :o

You'll also have to specify under all risks (expensive), and if you use your setup for pro work (you get paid), they'll charge you more.

Not sure if you have a flat/house at all but if so then perhaps look at getting household insurance and car insurance together and then specify the camera and any other items of value eg jewellery etc on that. Often this will be a lot cheaper than insuring all of these things individually.

This is all good and well, but doest one's household contents have to be worth a certian amount to have it insured with your car?

They usually require a minimum amount of cover for household, which is usually around R100,000 to R150,000. But as stated it sometimes still works out cheaper getting it all together.

Just on this note, remember if you insure your household contents for R200,000 and then get damages or lose something to the value of R50,000 and an assessor comes around and assesses that your household contents are actually worth R400,000 you will only get paid out R25,000 on your claim as you are under-insured. Do not assume that because you have cover for R200,000 you'll get paid your full claim.

Ja you see thats where my problem is. i dont own enough "house hold" contents to get to a 100k. Im not even sure my household contents is worth 60k. Is there anyway place where one can just ensure what you own??

Here are some articles of interest to some people in this thread :

How to … insure your household contents

When you move into your first home, one of the first things you should do is take out insurance to cover your household contents.

While homeowner's cover is insurance that covers the actual bricks and mortar of your home against damages, household contents insurance covers you for damages to, and loss and theft of your personal possessions and general items in your home, such as your furniture and appliances.

How to ...insure your mobile gadgets

The loss of a valuable portable gadget, such as a cellphone or laptop, is not only a big inconvenience. If you aren't insured, it can also leave a huge dent in your pocket.

When it comes to insuring your cellphone and laptop you have a number of options, each with different cost implications. Before you make a decision, remember that you get what you pay for, and for many, it's insurance that you can't afford to be without.

ok outsurance has a "out and about" cover specialy for things u need to carry with u. things like laptops ipod etc i could not see if camaras etc was included in this. i think i need to call them

thanx for the input

Insurance is a great idea - I broke the LCD on my 400D and would have been kicking myself if I hadnt insured it.

As per your question above. The best would be to have at least some home contents cover and include your camera to be insured under specified portable possessions. Different insurers have different clauses as to what is covered or not. However, the insurers that we have facilities with will offer full cover and your whole camera provided you give the proper values.

I hope this helps.

;)

If your house contents is not worth more than 60k... Depending on the premium your paying on 100k.. it may be a smart idea to cover your own contents...

However, if you stop your home contents now, you may loose your NCB status (no claim bonus) which would be the amount of years you had contents cover without claims. If you loose NCB, then any future home contents cover you may take, will not reward you with this discount, and offer a higher premium.
