I got my S3 a few months ago - just after a colleague has dropped his I saw it shatter.

Slightly worried now, I asked about insurance and if they'd cover if I dropped it (user error) and she told me yes. I double and triple checked she understood and she told me it would be covered. I took insurance ... R150.00.

But now I need to query :

a) That's pretty high - if I go through my own household insurance and specify, would it be cheaper? Would they cover me dropping the phone?

b) Was she correct - would they cover if I dropped it?

Cover under your household policy's all risks section. Guaranteed cheaper, and yes they cover accidental damage.

And find out if there is a specific excess for mobile phones. On mine it is R 150,00 (Santam). Scratches are excluded

On mine, no excess. Dropped an iPhone 3GS, they replaced the screen, paid in full.

Interesting, is it not easier to self insure on something like this, yes the phone is expensive, but I know for me in all the years I've owned a phone I've damaged / broke one! Rather just save R300 for the next 20 months and keep it as insurance.

With budget, insure my Galaxy s3 for 7k and wife BB 9900 for 6k with R 900 excess. Premium R70 pm.

Usually I would.

But after seeing a friends shatter, I got a little nervous. I too have never lost or dropped a phone - but my luck I do it with a fragile, expensive phone :P

Thanks for the replies!
