A bank in Japan wants to send me some Yen (which is nice). I'm with Capitec.

On the form I need to complete, the sending bank wants the "South African National Clearing Code". Phoned Capitec, consultant said to "just use the branch code" which is 470010, but she didn't sound very sure of herself so now neither am I.

Could someone please confirm/deny this? Screenshot:

Well this is what wise.com says:

If you have a SWIFT/BIC or IBAN code then you don’t need an NCC.

So something is off with that form I think.

Speaking of which, maybe use wise.com. If they can't help you receive Yen you can get close with an NZD account.

Unfortunately Wise doesn't have account details for Yen.

I know, it's a long shot / last ditch effort, but NZ does seem to be a country (the one country?) where this NCC thing is actually used.

But before that maybe try asking the sending bank...

This is for payment of a rehabilitation claim from the now-defunct Mt.Gox crypto exchange. Their bankruptcy proceedings have been dragging on for years (I originally filed the claim in 2015). The form I need to complete is at https://claims.mtgox.com. Horrible UI.

I can only choose from two banks in Japan as the source of payment, unfortunately, so 3rd-party providers like Wise.com is not an option.

I saw that too. I think Mt.Gox's online form is doing some sort of validation on the NCC field but from all the information I've managed to gather, an NCC is not needed in SA so now I'm stuck.

Anyway, thanks for everyone's input. I'll try email the bankruptcy trustees. Have also found some posts at https://www.reddit.com/r/mtgoxinsolvency/ with similar problems.

Wise doesn't offer a Japanese bank account but it does offer local accounts in New Zealand and other places in your name. I'm thinking if the JPY bank can't handle sending to SA they might still be able to send to one of the Wise.com options.
