Does anyone know where I can pick up the proc in the title?

I have decided to turn my old Xeon server into a NAS machine (8 drive bays). It only has one dual core proc in it though. Would like to fill the other socket. Just because :)

Waste of electricity imo. A single Xeon is already overkill for a home file server.

I am also running Win Server 2012 on it. Going to move my downloads to this server. And if it can handle it, Plex its-self.

I added "Just Because" to the OP because I want to see what I can do with it.

Go for it by all means. I get the "because I can" angle - I just don't think you'll see any real benefit. I suppose if you hit some funky codec that isn't hw accelerated then it might help...

I'd worry more about the board (Raid) tbh.

Hopefully plex can make use of it. It's frikken heavy on cpu when transcoding for Roku's. My 2.4ghz only just manages on 8mb/s 1080 video, any higher quality and it buffers.

I recommend joining and checking out the Carbonite forums. A lot of old server stuff pops up on there and there are even more network admins looking to dump some of their older stuff.

That is what concerns me. I used to run PMS on my old Core2Duo and it choked on high bitrate 1080p.
I have since moved PMS to my 3rd gen i7 dev machine, but it's not ideal. I don't want it running on the machine I work on.

I am setting it up on the Xeon now and giving it a run. Will see how it pans out.

Otherwise I will keep the chassis, and replace the insides with an i3 or something. Need 10 SATA ports though so will probably have to get expansion cards on top of it. Sigh... Don't want to spend money. Rather try make use of what I have.

I have a Xeon lying around still boxed... Will be check the model number and let you know..
Will only be tomorrow though

Just checked, it's not the same one.

The one I have is the HP E5430 ML350G5 Kit
Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® E5430 Processor (2.66 GHz, 80 Watts, 1333 FSB)

I bought the 2.4ghz core 2 duo to beef up a ****box old office pc which became my plex server. But in retrospect, should have gone minimum 2.6 quad.

Hmmm... You giving me itchy feet to fire up an old Dell server that's lying in storage... Wasn't the greatest system, think it was also a dual CPU 2.4GHz Xeon.
