Hi,
anyone know what RAM I can use in my intel imac. Its a Core 2 Duo 20".
It takes 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300), 200 pin (I think).

Or should all memory that meets those specs be ok?

Thanks

Also have a look at www.kingston.com - it has a tool to see exactly what RAM is supported.

That said, from what I've seen the generic memory works well. I have put Kingston Value Ram into my Mac Mini (PPC), a friends PowerMac, and a PowerBook.

The Kingston equivalent modules:

KTA-MB667/512 512MB Module
KTA-MB667/1G 1GB Module
KTA-MB667/2G 2GB Module

I got the replacement codes from Kingston for my MBP 17", and ordered it from Axiz way back when

I've just put in 2 x 1GB modules in my Mini Intel 1.83Ghz. Original Samsung RAM from transintl.com, lifetime guarantee for Macs. Cost R 1500 for both modules delivered to nearest Post Office.

How Much *$**&#

My wife just got the mac Brett got and Im looking at boosting RAM but Im confused...
http://www.digicape.co.za/storeview.php?product_id=40
is charging R1720 for 1GB of the stuff and yet I see it here

http://www.pricecheck.co.za/categories/130/Internal+Memory/
for R489

I think both are PC2-5300†
unbuffered
nonparity
200-pin
667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

What am I missing or do I just research stuff being a mean and poor PC user?

If anyone has bought 1 or 2GB simms for this box for a good price let me know.
Some asides. I see the digicape site says you can upgrade to 2GB but Ive read elsewhere its up to 3GB with 2*2GB modules (you loose a GB coz it cant see it)
Irritatingly when my wife (designer) bought the box I said max out the RAM but you HAVE to get it with the poxy 2 512MB sims and throw them away and then upgrade....grrrr
Also, whe you have Photoshop and CS2 open + some small work you have about 40MB free (thats what the monitor thing says and Ive closed all other progs that I could)
However, I believe it might be quite nice when the RAM is boosted.

PCs forever :)

Use any ram you like as long as it matches the specs. The http://www.crucial.com/uk/ link above will tell you what you can buy.

iirc 3gb is the max. . . if you can get it. You can put in 2x 2gb but the max it will see is three.

BTW - photoshop CS3 flies -CS2 isnt intel based so has to run in an emulation layer called rosetta.

Wow, very interesting indeed. Just spoke to wife who says she has heard that but that you cant save down...apparently..so if shes using 3 she cant save oin a format that cs2 will read. Any truth??
The crucial link is a winner. I just phoned project3 here in CT and they want over 4k for a 2GB stick that crucial want 50 quid (R750) for...I do understand fair profit and the fact you have to pay staff and premissis but that really is rude...the 1GB sticks are cheap at only R1100....
You sound like a Mac user Bwana or are you "twee talig"

It might depend on the app - I just created and saved a multi layer psd in Photoshop CS3 and apart from a contrast layer warning it opened fine in Photoshop 8 and imported into illustrator 11 - both part of the CS (1) suite.

Havent installed the other cs3 suite apps yet so I cant comment on those.

Local Apple resellers should know better.

Been a steady mac user for about 10 years now. I do everything on a 17" MacBook Pro.

The two are not the same. The one from pricecheck is KVR which is kingston's cheap-o RAM (which doesn't mean it isn't good ram, not at all). The stuff from Digicape are stuff that are specifically tested for the Mac - something similar to Kingston's KTA-MB667/1G

KVR667D2N5/1G - £17.77 http://www.digital-fusion.co.uk/Inu_products/INU_ProdDetailsL9.asp?ref=29356818

KTA-MB667/1G - £24.71 http://www.digital-fusion.co.uk/Inu_products/INU_ProdDetailsL9.asp?ref=29357137

The price diffence is much bigger in S.A. because of volumes. KVR sells a lot in S.A. but Mac specific Kingston is probably important in very small quantities if not on demand only.

Well, it's getting somewhat thin on the ground - it is PC100 or PC133 after all. And those older Compaq notebooks don't like generic memory. At all....
