Does anyone here have both a Mac with Intel graphics and one with ATi/nVidia running Aperture (bwana maybe?). How big a performance difference does it make?

I've got an iMac 20'' at home with the Dedicated ATI card and I can notice a considerable difference between that and my integrated graphics on my Macbook.

Previewing of images is more or less the same but when it comes to jumping into the clone brush or the Dodge/Burn plugin I see the difference.

And just making changes in general? Using the sliders? I find that there is some lag between sliding and seeing the changes reflected on screen. It gets especially bad if I have cropped already.

limnos, have you tried using VTC's? www.vtc.com, check out the Aperture 2 VTC. It's quite literally an interactive Video Training CD (VTC) They give you a preview of the first 15 minutes or so to try out.

Aperture training in JHB, try out Terrasys, they do training on anything and everything Mac related including most of Adobe's goodies.

Also a suggestion from my side is to just give Adobe's Lightroom a try as well. Both Aperture and Lightroom are available as 30 day demo's from their websites.

Sorry but I've only got Aperture on my MBP (ATI Mobility Radeon X1600). Its plenty fast though - fast enough that I'm not seriously considering an upgrade even though my machine is getting pretty long in the tooth. :)

Which generation is your MBP? I was seriously thinking of getting one of the refurbed last gen MBPs off Apple's website, they only have 17" models left - that's way too big. I'll see what fixing my MacBook is going to cost before deciding what to do. I wasn't planning on getting an MBP before May (another visit to the US).

MA611LL/A - and 17" is the only way to go :D

The big screen would be nice, but 3kg is too much. I carry my notebook around with me too much - even my MacBook is too heavy to my taste. If they get the 17" down to 2.5kg, I might consider it, but I was really hoping the 15" with the new manufacturing process might come down to about 2kg. Instead, it gained weight.

At least the MacBook is now down to just over 2kg. But eish! No FireWire! No deal!
