Bit of a noob question, looking to upgrade to new laptop, I am relatively familiar with Intel's chips but was wondering what the equivalent one's are in the AMD range? Thanks in advance..

Basically:

AMD FX 4100, 4170, 4130, 4300 = Intel Core i3
AMD FX 6100, 6200, 6300 = Pretty much in its own leage, but priced with the i3 family
AMD FX 8120, 8150, 8320, 8350 = Core i5 family

It's worth noting that the dual-module, quad-core FX chips are mostly equivalent to the i3 family, even when overclocked. The six-core chips outstrip the i3 family and most of the i5 lineup in threaded applications that don't use floating-point math. The eight-core chips can outrun the quad-core i7 family in multi-threaded applications, especially when it comes to Piledriver-based chips, although for the most part the octocores will play with the i5 chips.

Also bear in mind the Intel Ivy Bridge architecture that gives superlative graphics performance in most applications. I am not sure how AMD is positioned there.

Intel also uses less power as far as I'm aware which is important when you have a laptop.

I wouldn't call their lead "superlative". They're ahead, but not by much if you check out reviews by sites that aren't biased towards either side.
