Hi all...

Right i have a core 2 quad Q8400..

4gb ddr3 Kingston

So this is the year for a new upgrade..so I've seen the AMD FX x8 CPU's and the Intel i5 cpu's..seeing that round about the same price range..

But which should you go for?i do gaming/browsing/youtube..

Budget i'd say is R2600 for now..i can still use my current ram..so it's Mboard and CPU

Which should i go for and why? thanks!!

Intel Core i5.

Saves you from paying a bunch extra to Eskom, plus in most use cases it will be considerably faster.

Hmmm i5 seems to preform better in every test :/ ...and pricing is so close! id pay R200 more for 30% more performance

So comes down to,for the $200 price range and what you get out Intel takes the top spot? Core i5 that is...

According to tests yes, the i5 Core above the AMD, except you be interested in rendering 3D images in which the AMD is slightly better, but should that have been a concern you should go the i7 route which is superior to everything below at this moment.

AMD will one day again be on top, but then it will probably be expensive.

i see what you mean, but in this comparison it shows the intel 3470...i was aiming for the core i5 3570k..so it should be way better

For that kind of budget, there's two ways you can go:

Intel Core i5-3330 @ R1990
MSI H77MA-G43 @ R844
Total: R2834

Something similar to that is what most fans of the Intel camp will recommend. There's limited space for tweaking though, because the H61, B75 and H77 platforms don't allow overclocking. You'll still be satisfied with the performance boost. Personally, I'd go for something from AMD:

AMD FX-6100 @ R1533
MSI 970A-G46 @ R874
Total: R2407

Cheaper buy-in, equivalent performance, room for tweaking and overclocking and it'll be the faster solution if you use stuff like video encoders or any multi-threaded program.

Budget is more like R3000..Mboard doesn't have to be top of the line for now..Ill upgrade that later on in few months time

Go for this and this.

You can downgrade the CPU to this which will put you slightly outside of your budget.

Also remember... Intel is releasing Haswell CPUs in around June. Should be faster and more power efficient, might also overclock higher.

but could be a lot more expensive to :/ ..

well then ill rather do this..the 3570(not the 3570k) is R250 cheaper..

with that ill just get a better Mboard..

Should be fine?well im just assuming the 3570 and 3570k are very good CPU's ..one just OC where the other doesnt?

might also overclock higher.

The deeper I go into Haswell, the less I see overclocking being an important consideration. Intel's doing some interesting stuff with the VRM integration and I think we're going to have even less choice with smaller turbo bins for those who can't squeeze in a K-series chip. But anyway, thread derailment over.
