Hi there

Hope somebody can cast some light in the darkness.

We are looking at the Intel Pro100/S desktop adapter. This adapter can offload packet data for encryption to the onboard encryption chip. Windows (and your OS of choice) still uses the default Pro100 driver.

Now - how do I check that it is actually encrypting the data?

I have tried a packet sniffer from another PC and it picks up nothing - and IIRC is that switches and packet sniffers doesn't coexist with each other.

The packet sniffing software we're using is smartsniff from nirsoft.net

Check the settings of the adapter via it's properties in Device Manager. I've managed to get the TCP offload feature to work by doing that. The Intel network drivers and software is pretty comprehensive from what I've used.

Concerning switches and packet sniffers, you are partly correct, but there are solutions out there to the problem. If your switch is managed, you can use one port and mirror all traffic to that one and run your sniffer. I know there was a software package called dsniff under Linux that could also sniff switch traffic, but I could never get the program to work. It appears to be quite old now with no development happening.
