Goodday all.

I'm busy in the process of buiding myself a new gaming rig. My question is this: Should I rather go for the Intel socket 1156 i7 or the socket 1366 i7 CPU chipsets?

Apparently the 1366 is the more obsolete, and intel are no longer making those chipsets. However, the 1366 chipsets are cheaper for better performance, but the price sort of evens out on the more expensive motherboards.

I'm rather uninformed regarding this, so the above statement might not be correct.

Any help in the matter would be appreciated.

Both sockets will be around for a long time to come still. LGA1156 replacement is due Q1 2011, LGA1366 due end 2011. But both sockets will still be made, look how long LGA775 lasted. Then for gaming, unless you want a dual GPU set up, socket LGA1156 is more than enough.

Pretty much the only difference is dual channel on 1156 and tripple channel on 1366. I have a Asus Maximus III Gene and an i7 860 with a Asus 5870 and it performs almost exactly the same as the 1366 on the Rampage II Gene with the same card both clocked at 4ghz. The nice thing about 1156 is there are more processor options ranging from dual core 5xx to dual core with HT 6xx to quad core 7xx and quad core with HT 8xx. The decent rig to build these days is the 750 or 860 with 5850 and a R2500 to R3000 motherboard.

In the last year I've had about 20 different setups ranging from Q6600/Q9300/E8600/720 tricore/7850/i7 920/9550/670/860 etc and the happiest I've been is with what I have now.

Agree with juggy. Very little reason to go 1336. There are very few exception where going for a core i5 750 is going to yield benefit. Better to invest in better graphics, or ssd os drive.

personally, i think 1366 is a waste of money, its good for servers though. But tripple channel doesnt do much for me to want to buy it. 1156 is pure ownage, although...it will be phased out next year Q1, but you should buy the pc for how long it will last you...not panic when the board gets phased out, hell im still on 939 and im perfectly happy(sentimental value) with mine...although i have to sell it at the end of this month.

Other major differences are that the CPU's on the 1366 can multithread, so that you can have 8 threads on a 4 cpu machine.

You also get a six core cpu for the 1366 socket, AFAIK this is not available for the 1156 pin. Then you can have 12 hyperthreads.

If you need all of this, of course !

The OP is playing games. So no, not needed.

Don't forget the bandiwdth limitations on 1156 when you wanna use USB3 and Sata3.

Not sure I understand this??? i7 860 which is 1156 has 4 cores and hyperthreading = 8 threads.

I was just about to say something too - Jola are you really telling us an i7 860 on a 1156 mobo can't multithread?

OK, it looks as if all of the socket 1156 i7's can run two threads per core.

Edit : Nice summary here : http://ark.intel.com/ProductCollection.aspx?familyId=28037

So my comment only applies to the i5's.

This is on my XMas list :

But only if someone else pays !

AFAIK the socket 1156 i7's can only run one thread per core - I will check up and confirm.

hmmm....damnit - was thinking of buying a maximus III mobo but if this is true I don't know any more....

Dude, Jola was talking out of his ass. I have MIIIG+860+2x2GB Team ram and it runs 4 cores hyperthreaded which as we all know 4x2=.... wait for it.... 8;)

This is how 1156 goes

i5
5xx = Dual Core
6xx = Dual Core HT
7xx = Quad Core

i7
8xx = Quad Core HT

5XX is i3 and they have HT. The difference between i3 and i5 dual cores is that i5 have Turbo Boost for single threaded operation.
