For those still stuck on dial-up modem connectivity, the CellC 2Gb package should work out significantly cheaper than Telkom.

Consider :

You get 24x7 connectivity with CellC, whereas with Telkom you'll have to pay extra (depending on the type of package you've chosen), and stay online for as long as you want without worrying about the telephone bill at the end of the day.
No reliance on Telkom lines which might get stolen
GPRS/EDGE speeds might actually be slightly faster than modem speeds
No more dial-up modem issues (such as thunderstorms, line noise, or somebody else wanting to use the line in the middle of a large download session).
Fixed monthly payment, or once-off payment (R150 a month).
PLUS - if you have a laptop, and goes off to visit friends/relatives in a good CellC reception area, then you can take your CellC dongle with and enjoy the higher speeds without any hassle.

And, ultimately, free from Telkom. :D

On top of that, if you still have remaining data, you can just put in downloads in manager, drive to covered area with your laptop and download everything you put at home, within minutes. :D

My dad in in need of mobile internet. However. CellC's 3G coverage (or the lack thereof) is preventing us from going the CellC route as he'll need it in Hermanus, which is not yet covered. So to the guys with some experience: Is a CellC speedstick on EDGE/GPRS worth anything at all or completely hopeless? I really don't want to go with MTN/Vodacom.

I'm using the Cell C data package with just EDGE/GPRS which is all that's available in our area.

It doesn't break any speed barriers, but at that price I can live with that. I can do all my downloads as long as I'm not in a tearing hurry, email and general web access is fine, and most times I can even access streaming audio (e.g. from the BBC iPlayer). But of course videos are generally out of the question, and Skype might work on audio only (no webcams) most times. So you have to weigh up the incredibly low cost against a few compromises you have to make.

Also, there is limitation, possibly technical: you can load only one website or only one download. Was getting this while I was on EDGE/GPRS.

with cellc's recent network issues (disconnects, slow @ss speeds ever since January, i would rather prefer dial up!

Excellent speeds my side, no slowdowns.

Except for some funny connectivity issue (had to disconnect-reconnect for everything to work again) I'm happy chappy.

I've been using my new CellC Speedstick for about 3 hours now and I'm very happy. I don't feel any difference in page loading times between CellC and 4Mbps ADSL. And as a bonus I got 2GB cap for January - free of charge! Well done CellC!
