Interesting article on tweaking SNR on a modem

The Billion B-8800NXL (amongst others) allows one to tweak a SNR setting.

I came across the following article (whilst researching the setting) and realised that a high SNR may not always be a good thing.

This would've been useful to us all but now Telkom is using the new ASSIA Expresse system since December 2014 that does not allow you to change your SNR any longer. It is locked at 6dB :/.

I don't think that's true at all :wtf: my SNR is currently 15dB.
You can still change your SNR quite easily; the changes just aren't permanent, and never have been. This is how I can do it on my DSL 2750u:
1. Telnet or ssh into 10.0.0.2 and log in as admin with your password.
2. Type adsl configure --snr [%] where "[%]" is the percentage you want the SNR to be. Example, if you want to go from 12dB to 6dB, you'd type adsl configure --snr 50.
3. It will automatically resync with the set value. Line speed will automatically configure itself, too.

Thanks, i have done this and just to give some history.

November 2014 - changed to upto 20Mbps ADSL2+
Without changing SNR - speeds were 13Mbps +-
After changing SNR - 16Mbps MAX i could achieve stable

December 2014 - New changes at Telkom
MAX speed - 11Mbps

Changing SNR did not even work at all. This is also confirmed with cavedog on a thread he made about having the same experience.

Can you confirm you are able to modify your SNR right now and synch slightly higher if on upto 20Mbps ADSL2+ profile?

Not doubting but just what i have experienced .
