Interesting news for 384kb subscribers...

Techcentral have apparently gotten a hold of the Telkom memo for their next generation network rollout. The upgrades include minimum speeds of 2-4mb within the next 4 years, with 1mb as a standard between 2013 and 2014.

Sounds very interesting, but will they be able to keep up with that kind of traffic? Currently lots of exchanges are messed up as it is...
 
Although it would be great to get faster speeds, the cost of bandwidth would need to come down for this to be worthwhile.
 
Now they want to offer higher speeds - great if only they could get their pathetic support sorted out too. If a intermittent line problem is logged, at this point it's just close the call because the line appears to be working causing customers endless hassle to try to get it sorted or just give up. You cannot reopen the call if more than a day has passed since they silently close it, you have to log a new one and start all over again. Maybe they should launch a quality improvement program too...
 
that would be fantastic- unless theyre just planning to drop all >1mb and force upgrades.... knowing telkom....
 
Heh, I almost fully expected this to be a troll-y post, because there's almost never any interesting news for 384 subscribers.
 
Damn..thats freaking awesome. But how will the ISP's handle this?? I would be ****ting myself if I were them. Traffic usage would go up like mad.
Quite a cut-throat industry go get into I would suspect...as you know the speeds will only get faster and faster.
 
All very nice but 2-3years just to get to a standard of 1meg? talk about getting left behind in the dust

Yip and here is a source as well.

Well 384kbps in the year 2012... Hopefully, it would be at least 1mbps in 2013...
 
Oh by 2013? Yoh that is far, but worth while waiting.

It would be nice if they make the minimum 1mbps by 2012, yoh 384kbps is killing us

My experience with getting Telkom problems sorted out is the complete opposite. I have had really good service from them of late regarding problems I had with my line. In contrast Afrihost, my main ISP, are farging useless when it comes to solving problems. And they want to take over my line from Telkom? Fergeddaboutit!
 
I can confirm that we have a MSAN in our DC, cut-over completed this weekend.
My stats are:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 10012 kbps 1015 kbps
Line Attenuation 11 db 0.5 db
Noise Margin 23 db 6 db
so awaiting the trail eagerly :D

This will not apply to ALL exchanges.

AFAIK it will be limited to existing high revenue generating areas in urban areas and confined to suburbs within the biggest metros.

Yes, the pilot for 40Mb/20Mb is only 2% of the population HOWEVER the 384kb upgrades will be nationwide - they upgraded all of the 512Kb to 1024Kb no probs.

No. Again it will be quite some time before that is even remotely possible.

They'll have to shorten the local loop in plenty of towns/cities by dropping MSANs all over the place. Rollout of IMAX/UMC units (not already ordered) has been stopped due to MSAN deployment.

The next and bigger problem is the state of the copper cable network. It will require a massive overhaul and neither Telkom plus all their contractors have the capacity to do this in two or three years.




EDIT: and the above is for 1Mbps minimum....

"Within the next 4 years" well thats no good news for today, nor tomorrow. 4years is a very long time 1460 days...wtf!!!
