Along came FiOS. In 2004 we moved to a new place that happened to be in Verizon's coverage area (most of Dallas County was in Southwestern Bell's). We picked the house because of the lake, not the phone company; in fact, we saw it as a negative. We'd always had SWB (now AT&T) and weren't eager to change. But within a year, we were glad to be where we are, as we found out that our neighborhood was going to be one of Verizon's early areas to lay fiber optic cabling and offer FiOS Internet service (and later FiOS TV).
We've had FiOS for a couple of years now and we couldn't be happier with it. We started with a 15mbps (2 mbps upstream) residential grade connection. Recently we upgraded to a 15/15 business level connection. At first, we kept the T-1 because we were worried about reliability. After two years, we had to admit that FiOS was more reliable than the T-1; we'd had several short outages and one long one with the T-carrier, whereas we'd never had a significant outage with the FiOS line.
Have a look at the current editorial. Interesting stuff!
