interesting SNR observation during loadshedding

Normally my SNR value is between 9 and 11...but i noticed something very interesting this morning : routerstats was logging and exactly at point of eskom failure - my SNR improved to 15-16.

It was stable for the TOTAL 2.5 hours and when the power came back it dropped back to 10.5-10.0.

I guess with power failures theres less traffic on the pipes into the exchange, resulting in less impedance/resistance for you, thus increasing your SNR

Most likely that the power humm (50hz) contributes through induction to your lines SNR. No power=no noise.

Slightly off topic, but I had a related situation earlier this year.

I was talking to someone on our land line one evening, and the line was buzzing and making life hard, when that big power failure happened in Cape Town that night. 10 seconds later the telephone line cleared up, and the conversation was as clean and crystal clear as I've ever heard it.

Found that quite odd, so I guess that somewhere nearby, there's a power cable or something injecting that buzz into the line.

Found this while googling the same thing - now to test with the power off in your house vs load shedding - you should be able to see if it your house wiring vs the suburb wiring.

On my 20 Mbit VDSL line my SNR is normally about 8 and the line stable. During loadshedding (Like right now) it sits on 13 dB. Nice.
