Hi Guys

Started playing golf about 7 months ago, really enjoying it so far. i started off with a cheap Spalding package set that i got as a gift at work. It was a good set to start off with as a beginner but i have reached the point where i need better clubs to lift my game.

i went to the ProShop and Golfers club to see what they have to offer. I was looking at spending between R1800-R2400 on a set as im still learning the game and i can always go for high end clubs later.

The following sets within my budget are currently available at the Proshop and Golfers Club:

1. Powerblitz FZ 12 piece starter set (R999 on special) - 1 fairway wood, 1 hybrid, 6 irons and a putter (with covers)
2. Powerblitz FZ 15 piece set (R1899) - Driver, 3 wood, 2 hybrid woods, 6 irons and a putter (with covers)
3. Golden bear 15 piece set (R1699) - Driver, 1 fairway wood, 1 hybrid, 5 irons and a putter (with covers)
4. Wilson Kinetic 15 piece set (R2499) - Driver, 1 fairway wood, 1 hybrid, 5 irons and a putter (with covers)
5. Pinseeker Viper 5 piece set (R1999) - Driver, 1 fairway wood, 1 hybrid, 6 irons and a putter (with covers)

Any advice guys, in terms of quality and value for money.

Thanks in advance.

What is your handicap and how often do you play a round?

All those are very beginner ( though golden bear and Wilson okish) - might as well keep the current set because the woods you get with are crap.

I will look at buying a set of irons separately from the woods and driver, as well as the putter and maybe a gap wedge. It can be expensive though. Also have a look at their used drivers and sets. Sometimes you can find good deals.

Look at used stuff rather. Also I would recommend buying a set that is slightly "above" your skill range because it forces you to improve.

I agree, buy things separately from now on, irons, wedges, putter and woods.
Use yr current set and start substituting the above

Better clubs don't always make for a better golfer, kinda like cameras :D

Quite a good idea. Would allow you to buy something that might be more suitable to your game. It's worth calling the some of the pro shops or retail golf shops. People often trade in.

Another good idea. Nice one, Guantanamo. If you buy something that suits your current game you will be outplaying it shortly anyway as you improve.

All the advice so far is correct. Did they put you on the computer and check your swing for draw/fade/speed etc.
Go to both and you should get the same pc readings and advice. Wilson makes gr8 clubs for meduin HC golfers if cost is a huge issue.
I have been between 2 and 18 HC and the Wilsons i7 or i6 I think were great when I was 11-14 HC. I have now Callaway and they are also great but about R12K for the set.
At this time of year push them for discount and best trade-in on your old set. Also try save some money for a decent putter as this is where the game is won.
Remember to play with the same ball as consistency is king and of course keep your head down and still.

Good advice, as most of your time is going to be spent on or around the green ;)

Although I have the same blade my sister bought me (which was already second hand) some 20 years ago. I haven't been able to move on, as it still feels just right :o :)

Nothing like a new driver or a new set of clubs to make you want to play more or even go to the range. That said, its even nicer to find a good as new condition Taylormade driver in the second hand section for half the price. If you have to go brand new, going for the previous year model also give you good deals (for example a brand new R7 when two new models are out).

I have been a single figure handicap for the last 12 years and play off a 8 at the moment, but I knly play 4 or 5 times a year. My scores will be between 78 and 85 depending on how well I chip and putt the day.
I play with second hand Cleveland Tour semi blade irons - great clubs. But the clubs have been custom fitted for someone quite a bit taller than me. I dont play that often anymore and sometimes I tend to hit the heel fat because of the lie angle being set up for a taller person. Two or three fat shots a rounds may cost me 4 shots a round. So custom fitting is a good idea. I want to try and get my clubs cleaned, polished and fitted now instead of buying new.

Putters. Dont buy something below R200 because some of them are not correctly alligned and balanced. But there is no need to buy a R2000 putter or even R1000. Mine was R350 or something - a Powerbuilt. Important thing is that it feels good, gives you confidence and one you can be consistent with. Once you start missing putts the easiest thing is to think your putter has something wrong and it does not help if you know it was a R80 special.

stefan i dont believe you cause i know guys thats play between 1-3 time a week that dont have single figure handicaps

but yes dont go for the latest clubs

at most they are improved by a few percent but like now you can get a +-3 year old driver for half the price of a newer model one

pro shop sends sms's when they have sales ...go to them

Just checked on handicaps.co.za and I played 6 rounds this year, one being 9 holes. Have been studying this year so only played when my dad invited me to play at his club on competition days on Saturdays. I have been as low as 4 when I still played a lot. I shoot the odd 89 but they choose the best scores for handicaps so because I play little only my low scores count. I see I am a 9 now because of my last score.

If you really want good advice go register at golfwrx.com

Right now you can get some good stuff for pretty cheap because of the sales. Look for a Cleveland Classic putter. That is the best putter for the money, not even a question. Wedges don't buy used. The TM Rac are pretty good as are any Cleveland wedges. If you browse the used section at the Proshop or the Golfers Club and take down a list and PM me I will be more than happy to help you out.
