Internal DVD-ROM Showing Up as being Removable

Hi there, was wondering if anyone could possibly help me out.

My internal DVD-ROM for some reason shows up as a removable device every time a CD/DVD disc is inserted.

I am able to read and write DVD's however is seems to have affected Nero for some reason because Nero no longer lists my DVD-Rom as a destination to write data and music on.

Is there a way to reset everything for the DVD-ROM such as reg entries and/or driver? Or is there a way to let Windows know that the drive is not removable.

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
DVD-ROM: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7260S ATA Device

I think there's a bios setting which you have to change to make the device not hot-swap capable. What motherboard are you using?

I have a ASUS P7P55D-E LX with the ACHI settings on. This issue has only recently come up and I am pretty sure it's a registry problem or a key has become corrupted. Unfortunately there seems to be little or no support for this specific issue

What I will try now though is reset the BIOS to factory defaults.

What about just un-installing it from device manager?

And AHCI is supposed to do that btw.

Yeah I tried that.

Turns out it was my BIOS settings, the controller running the specific SATA ports that my DVD-ROM is connected it was set to AHCI.

So my stupidity strikes again, thanks Praeses!

No prob. My motherboard can set the AHCI ports to be hot-swappable or not - I guess that's why I don't have that problem. Yeah, my BR drive is running on AHCI

You got kinda lucky there, If Windows was in AHCI mode it would no longer boot if the Windows drive was also connected to the controller for which you disabled AHCI. Also disabling AHCI will affect the performance of drives connected to that controller, so that's also something to consider if you have any HDD/SSD drives connected to that controller.

Basically you can add a registry entry for the channel forcing it to treat it as internal (SATA rather than eSATA) while still having the benefits of AHCI. I'm not 100% sure it will help with Nero though.

edit, oh a BIOS update might also let you have both AHCI and not have it think the drive should be removable.
