Hi,
I heard from 'n pal today that if you are travelling internationally with electronic devices you are required to register these devices with customs (at the airport) before leaving.
Failure to provide proof of registration upon reentering the country customs duties will be levied on your equipment.

Can anyone verify this?

Cheers

The last time I travelled overseas was in 2006, and back then there was no need for me to register my cellphone and laptop. Not sure if things have changed now though.

I hope you guys bought euros or pounds instead of dollars.

The dollar is in freefall.
Going right through the floor.

Well investing in currency is not the wisest thing to do because it's very unpredictable (the rates change virtually every second). Also, I'm not sure if it's legal to bring foreign currency back into the country. I've instead chosen to invest in a unit trust.

I am talking travellers cheques here.

Dollar still dropping. Rand at 16.01 to pound.

yup, true. save yourself the hassle for your return and declare at customs before departing (last time i traveled from OR Tambo, the customs is behind you as you face the check-in counters).. took 5 mins to do - this after my Dad visiting with his laptop faced 45 minutes of having to convince some customs dude his laptop wasnt something bought beyond SA borders) .. also, you can register it once, then just keep the reg. document - then you can just use same doc any other time for the elec device that the doc is for, no need to reg the item each time, just once off.

true... document (IRP65 form?) is valid for one year. I've only ever had to produce it on entry once (in about 40 trips), so you could pro'ly get away without it, but why take the chance? It only takes a couple of minutes to do.

Cool thanks for the info. Im off to a conference in vienna in about a month, and not wanting any nasty surprizes when I come back, I just had to verify this.

Well Im not planning on leaving just yet. Maybe when I complete my PhD in 3 year time that might be an option but then again it depends on several things.
Personally simply upping and leaving is not going to solve any problems and besides I can't remember when last running away from problems solved anything.

As far as I remember, it depends on the value of the equipment. Last time I checked it had to be above R40000 per item, before it was necessary to register it. You can do it at the airport, or at a bank (I know Standard Bank used to have the forms).

I did it the first time I flew with a laptop, but haven't bothered since. It's never been a problem.

Freefall?

I'm looking at the USD/GBP rate since the beginning of the year and it's been pretty constant (Average (67 days): 0.50809, High: 0.51710, Low: 0.49740).

Similar picture against the euro (Average (67 days): 0.67752, High: 0.69600, Low: 0.65020).

For a while last night things got hairy.
Stable this morning.

I certainly hope it recovers(the rand that is)
