International FTP

Hi there,

I was actually thinking of filing a complaint with Telkom, but I wanted to ask first if anyone else has similar problems.

My problem is that international FTP is virtually unusable for me. I need to maintain websites located on servers outside ZA, and while I am using CMS backends and similar stuff, I still need to access them via FTP every now and then. Whenever I try, I keep getting timeouts and stalling connections, especially with the LS command. Also, when downloading from FTP sites, the speed is much slower than downloading ftom HTTP.

Can anyone confirm that?

FTP is the most useless protocol on ADSL. I have endless problems (and have many posts on myADSL in this regard, as do others).

SAIX -> IS (over FTP) - non-existant. Timeouts, connection failures etc
IS -> IS (over FTP) - not too many timeouts, but 1kB-1.5kB on a 512 account is unacceptable
SAIX-SAIX - timeouts and failures, but not as bad as IS <-> SAIX.

Have not tried international, but MAD (of Hellkom) complained recently about this very thing.

In my books, ports 21,25,110,80,23 comprise a very bare minimum of ports that should be usable on ADSL - regardless of any discussion of "shaping". This is not the case. What is even more alarming, is that there appears to be some "shaping" of port 21 on the IPC links to IS - although IS deny this, and pass the buck to Telkom.

I guess I'm lucky not to have any SAIX/IS ftp issues - has always worked fine for me.
