Hi.

This is my first time to post on this site.
I have been fighting with Telkom for close to a Year now, about the horrible ADSL speeds to international Sites, Especially international Gaming sites. I got ADSL in November 2002. OMF was I impressed. Seriously, it was superb. Then middel January 2003 , bam it slows down to such a bad state that I cant even log onto the Servers anymore...

I went through ages of struggling with them, ages....

I have been playing MMORPG's for close to 6 years now, starting with EQ. And it frustrated me so much, that I wasnt able to actually play anymore, that i went back to a normal Modem, and guess what, where I got a 1000-1500 Ping to the servers(if it doesnt time out), Now with the modem I get a steady 250-350 ping...

Are there any other SA folks that actually play MMORPG's or am I alone in my Hatred of this Service?

R4000 + later, im back on a Modem...was this not just a money scheme from Telkom, I ask myself, each night I toss and turn in bed, dreaming of sharp items , in certain sensitive places...

Definitely the case.

I have had for more or less the same amount of time and same experience.

I think the Congestion issue is a very valid one, for their network that is.

I am now less productive in my overtime at the office .... 1mb line to European office and 2mb from there to the Net [:p], games have to be played here.

Cant wait for the capped T1 ! :-D

Hi KemoSabi,

You're definitely not the only one trying to play MMORPGs, I've seen quite a few people post about their hardships here.

I myself started mostly with Diablo 2 (US West BattleNet), then Ultima Online for over 2yrs (Catskills shard in the US), then Diablo 2 Exp, then Neverwinter Nights. On -all- of these servers I suffered with pathetic pings, though that's just the blessing of living in South Africa in general, not DSL.

I have been trying to play NWN with DSL though, but the pings to the server I play on in Atlanta (Georgia, USA) is worse than what it was with my 24.0k (no typo, lived on a farm) modem connection.

I frequently still do a traceroute to the international servers I used to play on and the pings are dreadful with DSL [:(!]

Cheers,
SandMan

I have a level 65 Gnome Arcanist, with a bunch of AAXP points, but he is retired. I retired just before Planes of Power came out, so I missed all of that. At this time I'm doing Star Wars Galaxies... I actually "finished" the game and reached 250 skill points (out of 250).

I play a MMORPG called Eve Online - www.eve-online.com

We have a corp (aka guild) and we make extensive use of Teamspeak. Using Teamspeak the low bandwidth really shows on the ADSL. I am only in my third month of ADSL and the service has been shocking from the start.

Fortunately I was one of the early adopters of the Siyanda/Infosat/Mweb Broadband satelite thing and this (albeit lagged about 1000ms) manages to stay connected most of the time and provides a sort of playable connection. Using teamspeak over this is also much more succesful:

I dunno what other's usages stats look like but mine is: uploaded 156.31Mbytes and downloaded 145.99Mbytes - due to the return feed coming in on the satelite

I have been playing online games for the last 6 years, including Meridian 59, Ultima Online, EverQuest and have recently started playing Star Wars Galaxies.

After having my ADSL line installed, I can say I am disapointed to find that I cannot play any MMORPG over ADSL due to the "bandwidth shapping" that Telkom is implementing. While I understand the 3GB cap and "bandwidth shapping" for applications such as Kazaa, E-Donkey, Overnet etc., I cannot fathom why the same is being done to online games. Star Wars Galaxies for example only generates 30 MB of traffic in a 12 hour peroid and cannot be considered a high bandwidth application.

I hope Telkom resolves this issue soon. For now I am back on my R7.00 call plan for playing MMORPG over my ISDN line which I had the foresight to keep... just in case.

I also play an international MMORPG situated in europe. I've had the same issues with Telkom for the last 4-5 months.

It's ok for them to complain about peer-to-peer services and then go and shape the network based on their assumptions. Gaming is NOT peer-to-peer, it's Client-Server which is very different.

Yet they happily deprioritise every damn port except HTML, FTP and POP without understanding the real issues here.

I am not using a peer-to-peer application, so why the hell must I suffer because of that. I don't give a damn about Kazaa or Napster or whatever else they use, please shape the network accordingly.

I also asked Telkom to include my sets of ports as part of the prioritisation and got the same answer.

NO

I have a 55 Elven Ranger on EQ, but I stopped playing it before Shadows of Luclin was released. I have been playing Dark Ages of Camelot. 50 Ranger and 45 Cleric there. Guild Leader and a Master Fletcher :). I was in SWG's Beta Testing, Awesome Game. Just havent played it yet after release. Looking seriously forward t oWorld of Warcraft and EQ2...IF only Telkom would fix ADSL for International Gaming...

I used to be a Dark Age of Camelot addict, have a Fire Wizzie and a Cabalist on Morgan La Fey ...

Then in about Feb/March this year when Telkom put their *STUPID* packet shaping stuff in, became totally unplayable. Back to 33.6 modem for me whenever I wish to play. I HATE TELKOM!

*mutters*

Grrrrrrrrrr

I havnt been able to play to international servers with adsl evrer

but i think i might go mad if i dont get to play world of warcraft

i might have to plug in 56 k again :(

I have absolutely now problems with Online gaming so does my friends all are in the east of Pretoria. I find it very strange that some people are experience problems and some not...I think telkom are over loading certain exchanges with to many adsl users [:(]
