Hi all,

I know this is in the wrong place, but there seems to be nowhere else to put it.

I read another post here about international hosting. It wasn't very informative since everyone was either ranting about Telkom's idiocy or about the high prices of SA hosting.

What I want to establish is if there is any GOOD reason for me to host my websites in SA - and why I should NOT move my hosting overseas. I am currently with Afrihost.com. Their customer service is absolutely brilliant. They are incomparible. Unfortunately, the people I built the website for cannot afford the costs of local hosting. So I've been looking around for a good (and cheaper) international host.

I started off on http://www.findmyhosting.com and have tested the services of 2 companies so far:

  • Total Choice Hosting (http://www.totalchoicehosting.com) --> very very very good customer support. Unfortunately, they do not have Fantastico bundled with cPanel which is a major problem for me. Additionally, they allow adult oriented material on their servers which is also a major problem for me. In all other respects, a very good company. In all likelihood, they will go far.
  • eMaxhosting (http://www.emaxhosting.com) --> Abrupt and semi-slow customer support. They want to charge me maintenance fees to do a cPanel full site restore. Poor customer response on forum - plus lots of inactivity there. Joomla didn't install properly through Fantastico. Problems problems problems

If possible, can those users out there who have had experience with international hosting compaines post their experiences and thoughts on individual companies? If there is any SA company out there who can offer the following for R100 or less, please let me know:

  • Approx 1gb server space
  • Approx 2gb data transfer/month
  • More than 1 MySQL database
  • 5 email accounts
  • cPanel with Fantastico
  • Control of an existing domain (.co.za)

Thanks!

David

What do you mean control of an existing co.za domain? You should control it, if Afrihost registered it on your behalf then they should relinquish control of it if your invoices are up to date.

There are plenty of good int hosts. You are going to hear about the usual suspects like Godaddy but there are (IMO) better.

try webhostingtalk.com search for any host you thinking about and see what people say. You will probable be surprised.

I am not going to endorse any company (except myself:D ) but I will say this: stay away from peoplehost.com and fastactionhosting.com

If you want recommendations PM me otherwise it gets a bit messy with everyone recommending and then people saying that the other persons recommendations are wrong etc etc.

Indeed, I just mean that the domain should move over to the "control" of the SA hosting company (i.e. - I don't want to have to pay Afrihost R35/month to merely point to other nameservers!!)

I looked at godaddy (what a cheap name btw). They seem pretty good - perhaps others have some constructive opinions of them?

Where I have found myself being mislead in in 2 areas:

1) The quaility of the host's website (even though this does of course have SOME bearing on one's decision)
2) I have been comparing the amount of EXTRA stuff that I can get (eg 1gb server space compared to 1.5gb server space). I need to focus on what I need instead of what I can get - or want

I'm learning the long winded way that "goedkoop koop is duurkoop"!! Fortunately, I've chosen packages that have money back guarantees.

Thanks again,
David

Every Tom **** and Harry has money-back guarantees. Money is the last thing you are thinking about when you cant get through to support...

My personal choice ;) www.texo.co.za

Edit: Just check the url out for yourself. Texo advertises on myadsl and the owner is part of the forum. They have what you need as outlined in your post and if you require anything extra, just contact them and ask.

I don't mind if this sounds like advertising, we currently have 4 domains with them ;)

Hi David,

Your requirements and price range fit nicely if you want quality hosting, I do not think you will have any problems in locating such a host.

Good luck with your search and remember keep us updated ;)
