I hope somebody is able to help here. I am currently an Iburst subsriber and am looking for the best ADSL option around. As I understand it, once I have had my ADSL line installed my Telkom I need to get myself an ADSL ISP. Is there any reason why that ISP needs to be a South African based ISP?

Has anybody used an internationaly based ISP in South Africa before?

I don't think the ADSL network extends outside of Telkom local line architecture. In other words, ADSL functionality isn't supported outside of Telkoms SA exchanges.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Obviously it needs to be SA ISP as you are on the SA internet exchange!

Only way to use international ISP is to use satellite. Then you can go international.

No, you'd still have to use an SA ISP... unless you what? Dial into an international POP? Sounds a bit odd...

So yes, if you want to connect to the internet in southafrica then you have to connect with a south african ISP - much like you cant buy your groceries here at Tescos in the UK....

What about bi-directioinal satellite if you're going to go international.

bwana - can you tell me who provides this service ... I wonder if this would be a better option for me, seen as though ALL my traffic is going to be international.

I researched the satellite internet a while ago, and given the price drop of the ADSL prices, it is not economical at all to go for satellite!

The installation cost is +/- R20,000, then you will pay about R1200+ for 512/128 link.

Wow ... those prices are high! I agree with you swordfish1, I will just stick to the local DSL offerings, besides it seems that prices are coming down to the point where most can afford to run two 30GB accounts. Things *seem* to be moving in the right direction in SA, making my impending move all the more sweeter.

Telkom provide a lowsat system at "huge" caps from 500MB to 3gig last I checked. Its not worth it.

What about a jail sentence?

It's no where close to legal for an international company to provide access out of SA.

I take it Telkom likes to control all bandwidth in and out of SA then, so you are forced to use them and pay them money?

Yeah, I was also sniffing around the satellite angle a little while back - we're just not in the 'busy lane' orbit paths for many of the alt satellite offerings, unfortunately.

I'm waiting for some wide awake ISP in Botswana/Swaziland, to sneak a wireless offering over our borders - either that or Microsoft and Gates finally start their total global network of low orbit satellites. I remember them talking about this plan back in the 90's - if that were to happen, then we'd have access to a range of services and all Telkom could do was desperately try and block the importing of equipment for reception/tx'ing.
Technically intercepting/receiving sat signals is 'illegal' - but I notice that satellite radio's are being sold locally, which can pick up a few rebroadcast audio channels already, off one or another Northern satellite whose footprint brushes us..

bwana v3, thanks for that - I've sent them mail asking the important stuff - ie:
are we covered here in SA, or will we be covered for their service, costs (including setup/installation, rental, b/w quantities/limits - all the basics)

I mean if it costs a monthly bill of 1200-1500 - to get 50-200 gigs of unshaped speedy b/w (relative to SA speeds), it would be such a pleasure to cancel my telkom phone and adsl, and just have a nonstop sat delivery of internet, bypassing Telkom altogether..

I'm pretty sure they're expensive - I just brought it up as I remembered it from an earlier thread rpm (I think) started a while back.

And you have to take into account the latency factor with satellite too ... especially if you rely on VPN where there is a handshake. Other than that and cost, I dont see any other drawbacks.

Well there is the issue of legality but then again AFAIK its illegal for your wireless lan to extend beyond your property line. Course anyone driving by my place is welcome to check their email.
