Recently I noticed a difference between the way local and international photojournalist shoot at press conferences while watching news. International journalists tend to bounce their flash of the ceiling while local journalists don't bother and just pop their flashes right in the peoples faces.

Well the international way makes more sense and would more natural.

Could be any number of reasons besides poor technique. Locally PR people don't often take lighting into consideration when hosting press conferences. I've also noticed some pretty big agencies giving their staffers some pretty crappy gear to cover these events with.

I generally only cover sports pressers and the guys there tend to know what they're doing - sometimes though the venue itself isnt really suited to using anything other than direct flash.

I always chuckle when they portray press photographers on TV and have them pop the flash by pressing the button on the back of the flash. I guess it's got to do with noise but still…

When you know what you're doing you can really make the way you use the flash work for you. A few shadows in the right places and Mr Happy looks like Mr Sinister - all without the use of photoshop which is of course frowned upon. ;)
