Hey guys,

My roaming has been activated for a trip to Europe. Obviously data is the big shocker with charges. The Vodafone charge is R261.60 per MB!!!:wtf:

I have a Samsung Note 5. My service provider says I don't have to change any settings etc when I land that side?

Any guys with experience willing to confirm that for me?

I thought I would have to change APN settings etc?

I will definitely be switching mobile data and location off for the duration of the trip and make use of wi fi where available. My calls will be on as I need to be in contact for work.

Any other tips will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Thats correct. As long as you have international roaming active, and data roaming on, you will be charged. There are no settings to change - other than making sure you attach to a network, if the handset doesnt do that automatically.

off topic, but I had a user that used data roaming for "a few minutes" while in the US, and we ended up with a R120k bill, which he denied. After numerous affidavits, signed paperwork and many many calls to vodacom, I managed to obtain a detailed, URL based report, which shows facebook ,youtube use, cnn video streaming.

Thanks for the response. So if I understand you correctly data roaming would be the mobile data icon when you swipe down on my phone correct? AS long as that is off I wont get any surprises on data charges when I get back? And obviously location must be off as well? Are there any other settings I would need to look at?

Best get a local sim there for "in the day" use to avoid bill shock.

You can always change your voice answering service to notify people that you are unreachable on your SA number and should just mail.

This is a much better and safer option

Thats correct. Mobile data will control roaming data. Location services wont chew data if data is turned off. It will be useful to auto update your date & time when on another time zone

Unfortunately I cannot take the chance of losing the sales. Even though its a vacation, I will still be working. A slight down side to running a small business.

another option, if you can, is to take a spare handset with a local sim card and tether using hotspot from the local sim

I thought something similar but with one of those pocket wi fi items that I can buy there with like 3 gigs of data on. Then just leave my phone connected to that. Then I would be on wi fi calling the whole time not so?

On that note, would a pocket type wi fi from here work on their networks? I ask as I have a spare one at home that I can take with and just put a sim card in.

I may stand corrected, but wifi calling international goes off your local minutes

as long as you can change the APN settings, if you have to, yes. I used to have a cheap Afrihost one, which was unlocked. So when I traveled to Swaziland & LEsotho, I would just create the APN profile with the settings from Google and connect away

Mine is an afrihost unit as well. A Huawei E5372 LTE device. I have no idea on changing settings etc? Im guessing I would need to plug it into my lap top and so on? But hopefully the shop I get a sim card by will be willing assist with set up?

Can you guys confirm something regarding voice mail please. Do I only pay when I retrieve the voice message or am I paying when people are leaving voice messages as well?
