Hi Guys

I checked the MTN website and it seems like roaming can be enabled on any contract or pre-paid sim. Is that correct?

Reason I am asking, my sister is going to Canada and wanted to enable roaming on her TopUp75 contract, and was told it cannot be done. I have given her my spare contract so it's not an issue, but I just wanted to check what the story is?

That's true, TopUp & prepaid customers cannot have roaming, the best that they can have is SMS roaming. I use Vodacom TopUp, and I'm on sms roaming in Angola.

Hi
Roaming is available to Prepaid and Topup subscribers. Its referred to as CAMEL. But we only have CAMEL agreements with a few networks at the moment which means prepaid/topup roaming is extremelyl limited. Normal contract users are able to roam in almost any country.

The Prepaid/topup roaming (CAMEL) is only available in the following countries:

Country Network
Mozambique- MCel Mozambique
Namibia- CellOne Namibia
Nigeria- MTN Nigeria
Uganda- MTN Uganda
United Kingdom- T-Mobile UK
Portugal- TMN Portugal
Botswana- Mascom
Tanzania- Celtel Cl
Mauritius- Emtel

International roaming may be convenient, but it can be extremely expensive. Users are routinely caught out when they don't de-activate data downloads or lock onto unintended networks.

It is far better to take your phone with and get a local prepaid SIM on arrival. Do the effort of printing out your important contacts and send them an SMS with your temporary number.

I just yesterday got an SMS from MTN saying that I cannow activate SMS roaming.

Am I missing something? I been using MTN sms internationally since 1999 I think. And been using it from Brazil, Oz, Moz, Nam, Botswana.

Just on another note, any idea which network MTN would use in Ontario Canada? I been on the phone trying to get this checked because my sister is now stuck without a phone. (Even though I stated Canada was a destination and MTN said it would be fine)

Hi

We have roaming agreements with Microcell and Rogers Wireless. Just tell her to do a manual network search and select any of the two networks I mentioned above. It should work. You cal also PM me the Cell number so i can check if all the relevant provisionings are active for roaming to work.
Regards
DD

Hi
You need to remember that sending an international SMS or making an international call from SA is different to International roaming.

Hi Dr_Data

I have PM'd you the number. My apologies if you get multiple messages, my connection timed out while sending it (and no, it's the company LAN, not MTN :) )

DR. Data,

I've been using my phone in the countries mentioned above. The only thing that did not work was sending an SMS to a phone in Brazil. I could send SMS back to SA, but not from an SA number in brazil to a brazil number. Everythingelse it was fine.
Oh, and MMS is a different story.

Dr_D, does CAMEL allow data access in these countries (email, web, etc, not SMS)? What are the rates per MB?

Hi
If you send me the following details, I can investigate to see if its an issue with your number or possibly on the network you roamed on in Brazil. Please send me the following:
Your Number:
The number you attempted to send to in Brazil:
The network in Brazil you roamed on:

Thanks, Dr D. Do you know if there are any plans to implement prepaid data roaming with any networks?

Hi

CAMEL is still in the introductory phase at the moment, So I am not sure when exactly we will launch data roaming also. I will check with the powers that be and let you know :-)
