International Shipping

Hey all

I'm quite new to the whole international shipping thing, I normally just have the shipping handled by Amazon but there are some things I'd like to order from overseas(outside of Amazon, sometimes things Amazon don't ship to SA) that only ship via post and that's extremely expensive for some reason and obviously incredibly unreliable. It will range from books, to small electronic(?) devices like a pocket air purifier, or even some gloves

I see there are options like Aramex Global Shopper and TNT, but are there other/better services I should be looking at? Any pitfalls to avoid with these types of things? What should I know before going in? Some advice would be helpful as Amazon normally deals with everything.
