what are the basic requirements to use a handset as modem for internet access through ure laptop. say for example i have a Compaq Armada laptop operating with Windows 2000 and a Samsung E-800 phone which has GPRS provision from my service provider. i just need the basic requirements and the steps that i need to take?

You'll need either an infrared/bluetooth port on your laptop and the same on the phone, or a data cable. You might also need to install the modem drivers for the phone onto the laptop.

I am no expert with Samsung, but I'll tell you what I did with my 6630 to get it up and running.

Get phone
Get USB cable
Get modem drivers (from disc supplied) Samsung also gives a similar disc, I believe - called "Easy GPRS"

The obvious route would be to install the software and then follow the instructions as per software. If you want to do it manually, it is a tad of a process.

For my cable usb connection, I use AT+CGDCONT=,,"internet"<cr> as the initialisation command, found in modem properties and the modem dials *99#. With no password or username required.

Luckily Nokias software did all that for me, so I assume Samsung should be no different. I hope
But you have to set up a new internet connection via Windows' internet connection wizard first.

If I missed or got something wrong, anybody please fill the gaps.

Also you may use infra red , if you activate the infra red and put infront of the laptops infra red port. Windows 2000 should load a windows modem via infred link. Must have SP4 for win 2000.

Create a connection with no username or password, using the modem windows has created. Dial up number is *99#. You should connect
