Hi Guys,

Ive just setup a VPS windows server and need the box to have internet connection... i can only connect to it using their console. VPS.co.za havent answered my ticket from last night and i want to get this up and running ASAP. is there anything i need to do to "enable" any sort of internet access on the box??

i spoke to one of the admin gentlemen at vps.co.za and he said "a setting needs to be enabled on the box, i will get back to you on this"?? is this a setting i would be able to do??

I'm not sure what you mean by the VPS not having an internet connection? You wouldn't be able to connect to it if it wasn't connected to the internet?

i log into my account and they have a console which i can connect directly to the device. i can use it remotely like i was RDP into it. but when in i have absolutely no ping out, no web browsing nothing external what so ever. cant even ping my ext ip from my laptop. its as if i am sitting on the same network as the box but dont have an internet line and cnt ping the device........had this VPS since 9ish last night and have had to activate windows on it by calling MSoft... thats all ive been able to do in the device.....

So both in and out are not working?

Check what your network settings are, specifically if your dns servers are set to see if you can at least get web access. Is the firewall enabled?

flip im surprised i dont have to load drivers on this thing thats how barebones this is

network settings are configured by those host vps.co.za there is not much i can do about those. turned off the firewall to even test. in the "control panel" - not windows but the VPS i can create Port forwarding but that doesnt seem to make any difference whether i open ports or not. ie i open 3389 as a test and telnet is a no go on that port

Sorry, I'm out of ideas. I have a vps with them too, but a Linux one and haven't had any issues with it.

I limited my services with them to non-essential cause of their support issues. Good luck.

maybe im wrong in my thinking but in theory once a VPS is setup you should be able to rdp in and have internet access?

Thats how it should be... I know with some windows machines you have to enable RDP... but it shouldnt be the case for a server.

Yep. The linux vps is indeed completely open by default so if you start a service it will be open to the world if you don't do your own firewall setup.

this isnt a business critical server but surley the support should be the same whether it be a exchange or a toaster??? really getting peeved off now

I wont say that I dont have any services with them, because I do. But I dont put clients or any critical stuff through them because Ive experienced the levels of support you are getting. This is not uncommon.

ah great..... looks like im gonna break a record here for the shortest service at a company.....

Servers might not always have rdp access enabled by default. Please advise if windows is showing that it is connected to the Internet when logged on via console? If not, please have a look at the vm settings inside of control.vps.co.za

If the box can browse the net and ping Google you need to make sure that rdp is enabled and that the user you are attempting to access the server with is a member of the administrators group.

If you are still stuck drop me a pm, I've been using their cloud for hosted labs for quite a while now, might be able to help you further.

In their defence gothi they have the closest thing to cloud out there that is hosted locally. Been with them for quite some time and even though support sucks , I have only been down once where it wasn't my filling that caused the issues.

Their support needs a whole lot of work though, once they reach the level of service guys like afrihost offer they will easily be ranked as one of the best VPS hosts in SA

They use OnApp, which is a pretty good cloud system which is why I wanted them to be good. But Afrihost and RSAweb do clouds and while they might not be using cool OnApp clouds (I love onapp because it allows such awesome vps management)... Afrihost does have decent levels of support. Theyre honestly both equally stable. When it comes to keeping clients I use Afrihost. Support tickets get answered quickly enough. My clients pay me for a good service, if they do not get it they leave me. I cant risk clients on VPS.co.za levels of support.

OnApp is a cheap cloud system to setup (well so far as cloud systems go) You only need 4 servers to start a cloud. I think VPS.co.za bought a bunch of servers at Mweb DC and got an OnApp installation going.

I really hope VPS.co.za sort their support out. I want them to do well, but the lack of support just shows me they are not willing to hire sufficient staff. That either means they are cutting cost corners too fine or are too greedy.

If VPS.co.za sort out their support, I will be back there in a flash, but there are many VPS websites around the world with terrible support and Ive had enough of them.
