I signed a contract with Vodacom and received the laptop with 500MB Internet access. The 500MB went so quick. I enjoy downloading and browing as that was why I signed for it.
Is there a way I can buy cheap data so I can surf the net even when my normal 500MB is up. I see after my 500MB is up the cost to further browing is costly so I am thinking of another cheaper way to get access to the net.

I saw an advert on MWEB about their unlimit internet for R349.00 (Telkom line rental included) which looks great. But how fast is 384 kbps??? I am the only one using this laptop and uses the Internet for about 20 hours weekly. Will this Mweb package of R349 for 384 kbps suit me? Anyone tried them?

Maybe you guys know of a better provider please let me know wheather it is ADSL or 3G.

thanks alot

384kbps isn't that slow.
It is however slower than Vodacom's connection.

I would go for the R349 from Mweb.
Remember, this excludes Telkom Line Rental (+ - R130 pm).

I dumped my 3G connection in favour of a 384kbps ADSL. It's not as fast, but it is more reliable and predictable, and a lot cheaper. I prefer browsing using ADSL, as the latency is lower and you don't get the timeouts which happen every so often using 3G.

Thks guys...I know that ADSL is slower than 3G but I do not want to wait forever for a small clip to be downloaded, you know what I mean. So if 384kbps is not that slow as I think I will consider getting one for that cheap price.

On a 384kbps line you can't do streaming video. If a clip on youtube is 5 mins long expect your connection to take a little more than 5 mins to download it.

Find out from Vodacom if you can switch to a top up contract. So when your 500MB are finished after 2 days ;) you have the option to buy more. Yes its expensive but it's something to consider.

OR - have the same mentality as most forumites around SA as June 1 approaches.. "OMW my 384 is getting upgraded to 10megabytes per second, moar moar moar FTw!!11eleven!!"

true, youtube and such won't be as realtime like what it was on 3G. but IMO it's criminal that they (all the mobile companies) get away with overcharging their customers so much, and they dont deserve even MORE business

Oh...? So 384 kpbs will not suit me as I like to do some streamming videos often longer than 5 mins. Then what other options do I have beside 3g if ADSL 384 kpbs will not do? Sound to me I have to go higher than 384 kpbs if I want to stream and download some large files, but what the least kpbs should I have?

tHKS Again

Its not that it won't do, its the fact that you may wait a tad longer for the whole video to buffer. How much are you willing to pay? A 512K account may be worth your while? People think its a bit of a waste to get it as for a little more you can get 4096Kbps, but when you factor in line rental and data it is significantly more...

Try using Netlimiter to restrict your 3G connection to 384kb/s so you can get a feel for what to expect.

Streaming video is dependent on the size & quality of the video. Some videos will stream on a 384kb/s link but I would say the majority won't. There is however a workaround. I usually just start the video and pasue it at the very beginning and allow it to buffer about 33% before I start playing it again.

512kb/s will be better but the line rental for 512kb/s is just plain stupid it's so close to a 4MB/s line.
