Hey,

I have a n95 8gig and I ddl a few apps like Shazam Track Id and FerocaWeather, and both need internet connection.
When I connect over wifi, works perfectly, but when I use my 3g/adsl connection, the app connects to internet but does not download or update anything. So I tried an MTN sim card and both apps work correct,

any help please?

Thanks

(I wouldn't mind changing to MTN just that I use vodacom because it connects better to GPS satellites than MTN, any suggestions with this regard also be appreciated :) )

Could be a problem with Vodacom's proxy, perhaps v3g can look at having those URLs whitelisted. Can you provide more details?

:confused:How does that work?

Sorry about vagueness in previous post...

I not sure what u mean about the proxy but let me explain the problem, Shazam Id recognizes music tracks, it records 10 sec of the music playing and connects to internet to find a match. When I use my wifi access point it able to connect to Shazam database and recognize the song, but when I use my internet.gprs connection, it does not seem to work although an internet connection is made and I receive and error report saying "did not understand response from our servers." I thought the app might have a fault but I tried using a MTN sim card and it was able to connect and recognize the song.

I also seem to have similar problem with another app called feroca weather, and as name suggests it tells me upcoming weather, so again works on wi fi but on internet.gprs it says "connecting" and a downloading pop up appears in the application. After connecting to internet and a 5kb file is downloaded (according to progress bar on pop up) and the 'update' does not do anything because all the menus which meant to show the weather are blank. When I use wifi or MTN sim, the average file downloaded is around 40kb, and the the app works as meant to be.

My other apps (such as mxit, an infra red remote app, n-gage, nokia maps) that require internet access all work fine.

I tried installing the apps on my phone memory and external memory and both have same problem.

I using a n95 8gig and I tried another vodacom sim in another area to mine as well and same problem I having.

i thought that since I got my phone from iTalk (an MTN service provider) and using a vodacom sim, it might cause this problem. Would that make any difference?

With regard to the GPS, I noticed that when I had an MTN sim in phone (i observed this a few months ago) it takes very long for my GPS to connect to satellites, whilst with Voda, it alot quicker and I even able to gain access indoors, whilst with MTN even in open outdoors it takes very long.

Hope I gave sufficient info

Thanks once again :)

I not sure what u mean about the proxy
A proxy server processes web requests on your behalf, on some private networks you must specify a proxy server for your browser to use in order for you to access the internet.

Some ISPs use transparent proxy servers which intercept all your web requests without you having to specify one. These proxies are normally a good thing as they cache content, so if someone visits a site before you, you received a cached copy from a local server at high speed. These proxies also save the ISPs money as they are able to satisfy some requests from the locally cached content.

However, things can go wrong when the proxy doesn't understand the request or the content, particularly with custom applications similar to those you describe. It is possible to have the sites used by these particular applications "whitelisted", meaning requests and content will bypass the proxy and not be processed.

If you can, please provide details of the sites to which these applications send their requests, or at least where to download them.

No, I don't think any South African network operators lock their phones any more. I'm not sure if this is law.

Have you upgraded the firmware in your phone since you last tested? Since upgrading my N95's firmware a couple of months ago it finds a fix much quicker.

I got the shazam app from http://www.ipmart-forum.com/showthread.php?t=201412 , the homepage is http://www.shazam.com/

The other app is from http://corporate.foreca.com/en/products/wireless-mobile/ well thats the official site. I got the app from a friend, but the site included is the same (not sure of the site he got it from though ). I can email the apps if you would like that.

and with regard to the gps, I do have the latest firmware (v30) installed and i never tried with MTN sim tho after :( will try shortly :)

Thanks for all the help :D
