Hi Guys,

I need assistance. My kids are young, eldest 10 and the laaitjie is now 8. I have been giving them more and more freedom on the net now to a point where they have access to it 24/7.

Please don't get me wrong, I don't want to censor them from what the internet has to offer, I was googling something yesterday and was amazed at how easy Porn pops up right up top on the google search even for something stupid.

Is there some kind of way to restrict this for them. At least till they 16 I suppose :o

Many ways...
Most browsers have parental control.

Ideally you want a separate box acting as a firewall with additional content filtering, something like pfsense+dansgaurdian. PC based stuff they will just get around :D

Get Kaspersky Internet Suite - comes as a 3-pack license and is a few hundred bucks and allows parental controls (or Norton)

Explain to them not to go to porn rather than filtering.

When it comes to kids that sort of approach has never worked in the history of mankind… ever. :)

Don't get me wrong. I would love to do that. I doubt that telling a 10 yo and an 8yo that they must not google porn or porn related keywords...

I have no problem with them selecting to view it at a slightly higher age though. As noted above, but at 10... I don't think so.

lol, point taken. In the past I would usually wave my belt at the younger brothers and such and they would all obey. Nowadays kids are different though... hit them and everybody screams "abuse!!!"

I personally would go with a local install of firewall/antivirus - even if you filter out adult content, you will still sit with the issues of kids downloading all sorts of things (including malware, viruses etc). Parental controls on DNS makes only sense if you have access to multiple devices.

Educating kids on not watching porn is a moot point - I don't think that minors should be exposed to x-rated content - there is too much weird stuff out there which will even permanently scar adults. My kid has turned 16 (and is mature enough in most aspects) and I told him that I removed his parental controls and he can do whatever he likes on the internet (I do however check Squid logs once in a while).

Be prepared to find some weird porn sites logged very soon :erm:

I just don't want them to stumble onto it by accident if you know what I mean. What they download and so on I'm not too phased. And yes, I do agree that at around 16, they mature/informed enough to be able to watch porn if they want :D

All we had back then was Playboy and Scope mags that mysteriously had quite a few pages glued together
